They’re fighter jets are they? you know designed with A-A combat in mind? No thought not.

I don’t think you quite got the point.

Doesn’t take a brain surgeon to understand the concept of HOJ. 😉

Man, those Growlers and Ravens are some pretty expensive target drones then.

I think people refer to weapons package when they say Typhoon has US content, the AMRAAM, Paveway. Paveway can be replaced by israeli PGMs but then what about AMRAAM?, should wait untill Meteor comes out.

That’s not really a mandatory or vital part of the plane itself and not sold through Eurofighter GmbH. If for example India wanted to integrate the R-77 or some indigenous weapon, they’ll probably be able to.

Satorian, thanks for your efforts. It was most informative and surprising to me to see 1 US sourced part in the EF.

Do you happen to know if there are any US sourced parts in the engine?

I couldn’t find anything explicit about the engine, but seeing as how it is based on a Rolls Royce design driven by the British MoD, with the partner nations getting onboard alongside, I don’t see where they would have needed to source US tech. I have never read anything about it incorporating US tech and all press material only references the four consortium companies from each country.

And looking at sorties since the 1980s, wasn’t it that whenever A-A weapons have been employed, it was always two at most from a single plane? The average-AAMs-employed/sortie ratio for all recent conflicts is probably pretty damn low.

Two AAMs seems fine. Just pack more A-G payload in there.

Part can also mean technology. 🙂 So just listing contractors and sub contractors won’t cut it.

Parts are parts and technology is technology. You mainly spoke of parts so far.

And, have you got a list that is anywhere near that specific or extensive and tells us which US technology there is us in the EF then or which of those parts provably can’t possibly be produced under the companies’ own IP? 🙂

Because Dassault already has ties with India. It has less American parts. Full ToT including radar source codes offered. Better A2G platform.

Yeah, about the American parts in the EF

    I marked them in red:

    I am overwhelmed.

All that’s left, besides that one part produced in the US, are perhaps licenses, like IFF, GPS, weapon interface code, possibly RWR library data, etc.

Dependence on American parts though? Well, doesn’t look like that.

ajai_ijn, both the GE-F404 engines (F2J3 and IN-20) are for the first squadron and the 8 prototypes only. Thus, it is an interim engine only.

In my view, as EADs will provide extensive consultancy on Tejas, it can be safely assumed that their consultancy can best be executed & complimented on an EAD-produced engine itself i.e. Eurojet. Thus, GE-414 may not be selected.

I haven’t kept up on recent military aviation news in past weeks. Wasn’t there a deal with SNECMA to consult on the Kaveri engine destined for the Tejas?

Its a Russian jet so it typically should mean a western target. Most Western Radars claim to detect Mig 29 size target. Anyway it was on dti, they do not print rubbish and that is why I believe it.

I’m not saying they print rubbish. They print the best they can get, which in this case I consider insufficient to use it as a base for judgment. If I say “My car accelerates to 60mph about as quick as an open-wheel racer”, that’s not exactly rubbish, but nobody knows for sure whether I mean an F1, GP2, F3 or FBMW race car, which makes it not a good measurement to compare performance by if someone else uses the same description for another car. 🙂

Its not me claiming it, its me pointing out to the fact that it requires U.S sanctions to sell EF, and Rafale do not. I never said this component or that component.

It requires US approval to sell the EF in Saudi-Arabian spec, which contained GPS and MIDs (and IFF?), which in turn indeed require US approval and would explain that particular issue. The point the other guys here are trying to make though is that these are replaceable components, that can be interchanged with other makes of equal capability but different origin.

But, is there anything relating to the frame itself or the engine that would prohibit export without US approval? Considering that the EF is an European project very much aimed to provide indigenous capability and availability, I would be surprised if truly vital parts of the plane were subject to US regulations. GPS, MIDS, IFF and FCR code relating to US armament perhaps come to mind, but what else?

Like I said lets wait till the U.A.E deal, lets see if the Rafale would need a clearance from the U.S. 🙂

That would depend on the Rafale being sold with equipment that is affected by export restrictions concerning the U.A.E. to be an indication and it would require somebody to actually report about the necessity, which isn’t always a given.

Furthermore, that would still not conclusively explain anything about the EF.

It was not a personal attack. Just pointing out that I am a common man, who would believe multiple news sources saying one thing especially if there is no sources saying its not that way.

I’m sorry I misread that then.

Really, there are a lot of factors that make it difficult to be convinced firmly of anything. 🙂

Lets say an F 16 like target or Mig 29 like target.

There are still difference between those two. Futhermore, assuming that one of these was meant is speculation, not a valid conclusion. What if it meant the Su-27, while another article talking about a different radar used the same term to refer to the F-16, which (to go with ballpark figures) has an RCS four times lower? How compatible are the given range figures then? If a statement or claim hasn’t got a number (and preferably an SI unit) to it, I would be wary to draw quick or hard conclusions.

I don’t know which parts (possibly classified info) but i believe news from multiple credible sources, even if they do not go into the details.

It’s just that the details are important here if you claim something. So you don’t know whether the Saudi-Arabian spec approval was about GPS and MIDs indeed, because you admit that you don’t know which parts of the EF require approval?

So will most people in the world.

I would appreciate refraining from personal attacks and sticking to the topic.

Its hardly a marketing article that. Moreover, fighter sized target should mean a modern fourth gen fighter.

Even “modern fourth generation fighter” leaves a lot of room. An F-15SG or Su-27SM is still believed to be a whole lot larger in terms of RCS than the Rafale for example.

As for the term itself, it’s still a marketing term that Knaapo brochures are very fond of. I wonder where the article has got the term from.

I have been searching for it, flex posted a few of the components in his last post in the thread. Sintra says its the AIM 120 that is critical. But there is a whole lot of links saying it needs U.S sanction for foriegn sales.

I’m not looking for a whole list. Just name three to five parts in the EF that require US approval from the top of your head. And I don’t think a particular missile is an integral part of the airplane, nor is the AIM-120 usually sold through the Eurofighter consortium as part of the deal (but, if at all, as some G2G addon).

It is again confirmed by this months dti, the link is in a page or two before this one and it says fighter sized target. Oh and the 140-160 km claimed by Sintra in his posts is for the demonstrator radar (ie. not fully populated) that is also mentioned there.

“Detection range versus a fighter-sized target” is very much marketing-speak, because there is no uniform “fighter-sized RCS”, so it’s not exactly a reliable unit of measurement. Could be anything between 25m² and 1m², really.

Trident you are wrong about that on the Eurofighter it contains more U.S stuff than the Rafale and that’s why it needs American clearance.

I have a question though. Assuming that “US component” is not the same as “US component that underlies export restrictions”, with only the latter being of interest, do you know which specific parts (that may have been included in the Saudi-Arabian spec) of the Eurofighter require US approval?
