Any guesses as to what aircraft this is? Doesn’t look like the triangles seen over North Sea oil rigs a few years ago.

cost of military
[QUOTE=Creaking Door;2122830]In my opinion, it would be a mistake to judge the capability of the US military by troop numbers; and it is size of the US Army that is to be reduced to Pre-WW2 numbers, is it not?
The US spends at least seven times what Russia spends on defence (sorry, defense), NATO spends eleven times what Russia spends, the EU spends three times what Russia spends…
…even the UK alone spends 66.6% of what Russia spends on defence!

I’d like to see those numbers after money for pay and benefits is taken out.
CBS ’60 Minutes’ on F-35 features comments by Pentagon systems guy,

If you were making the decision on Brazils Future Fighter and could pick from Super Hornet, Grippen, etc. what would having the T-50 on the list do to your choice? The Sukhoi T-50, not the Korean T-50 of course.

Remember Chuck Yeager? Here’s his opinion:

In 1940 they had an air to air with a Spitfire and Camel. The Camel won out. Later came the real bout between Spitfire and Fiat C.R.42, and the 42 didn’t do so well.
Thanks for the comparison
‘The F-22 cannot do the mission of the F-35
–no 2k Internal weapons
–no IRST
–no FLIR
–no STOVL
–no Navel version
–no Export version
–Difficult to upgrade avionics
–Much higher lifetime costs (the largest singe cost factor) would wipe out any development and acquisition cost savings.’

If I were the PA acquiring assets for the land based I’d stay with the F-22, for the Naval the FA 18 would fill the void. But for the type of “wars” currently being “Fought”, an upgraded P-47 with eight .50s would be much more economical!
more$ than F-22 -Less performance
They could have saved a lot of money and received a lot more airplane simply leaving the F-22 in production.

For the kind of “Wars” the U.S. has fought since 1945, something with eight wing mounted .50 Cal. would have been more effective, and….just a little less expensive, i.e. P-47.
As for the F-35, 100 delivered, here’s where we are;

Aircraft with no lights
I’ve lived in my area, South Western Connecticut, for 50 years, I know most of the air highway routes, and very few aircraft I’ve seen get more than a glance. Two weeks ago, in darkening twilight I observed an unknown traveling northeast at a quick pace at an estimated steady 4,000′. Said aircraft was very brightly lit with white lighting all along the bottom of the fuselage along with the customary lighting. Tonight, a week later the same aircraft, same heading, same lighting appeared again. This time, as it approached in the darkening sky every single light on it was extinguished in an instant. I can’t ever remember an aircraft totally darkened with not even the wing tip lights, nothing. Does anyone have any idea of what this could have been?
