I was talking to a reinactor at Duxford’s Flying Legends who told me he has already been involved in filming for the Spielberg Mighty Eighth series that has been talked about for years and which is finally underway. He mentioned that Duxford is due to be part of that filming and that their will be a lot of Dakota’s arriving at some point this year as part of that series. Does anyone have any information on this or if these are scheduled to arrive? Just thinking that having a large amount of Dakota’s all together would be a great sight to see?

These images are taken directly from the flight simulator IL2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition.

Eric Carter told me that the lend-lease Hurricanes were unceremoniously dumped in mines as Stalin didn’t want the public to find out that Russia needed outside help.

I got the following information about the Dornier from FlyingPencil:

“I am researching the Dornier Do 17 aircraft, and the film showing this aircraft is invaluable to piece together lost history.

To be sure all that I have seen is fantastic, to see in color what is normally black and white!
However my resources force me to my subject (Do 17).

It is a Do 17E model, a light bomber built by Dornier in the mid 1930’s. It uses 2 BMW VI engines.
It was said it came from Croatia, but other locations possible.
Designad FE-2000 by the USAAF and nicknamed Axis Sally (after the notorious radio broad-caster).
Actually, not sure what came first, as the FE is an airfield in USA, so code was likely assigned after it was shipped to USA.

    Fate is unknown.”

Thanks Trumper, I’ll chase that up later today.

I have so discovered that the autbor David Ogilvy formerly of the Shuttleworth Collection was a Mosquito Pilot. Does anyone have contact details for him?

I sat and interviewed Eric Carter for a couple of hours in 2015. He flew Hurricanes with 81. Squadron and in Murmansk with the Russians during the lend-lease period. Not sure if this is of interest but here are the videos:

Final bit of detail I have found is a translation from French of the reason for the crash: “Slaughtered by night hunting”.

The difficulty I have from this translation is; does that mean by Flak or a Night Fighter?

    Again, thanks for any help?

    Cheers, Neil

Well, found out some more details.

    Flight Details:

    Base: R.A.F. Breighton, North Yorkshire
    Unit: 78 Sqdn. Bomber Command
Aircraft: Halifax Mk III, serial LK840 EY-J
    Target: Laon, Aisne, France
Incident: The aircraft crashed at Quinquempoix killing four of the crew. Sgts. A. Gill and W. C. Brown were taken prisoner. Sgt. S. W. Fox survived and escaped.

I am just wondering now if there is any information on what may have been at the target area to make it the mission destination. Also if there are any details or reports of why it crashed? Finally any pictures of the crew?

    Thanks, Neil

Thank you both. Appreciate the replies and the pictures, especially the F4-F3 with bags inflated. I guess this means that the Audacity carried the F4-F3 as Eric mentioned them deploying in another crash?

Hi thanks for the link to the externals of the aircraft. Have their been any cockpit photos? Just wondering what condition it’s in as regards dials, levers, etc, etc? A friend of mine is working on creating a 3D cockpit and any images would be really useful to see 🙂
