Was quite interested by this message in the replies:

    Dave Mason:
I was in Rhodesia in the late 70s, and I was chatting to a fella on an airbase near Bulawayo and he told me he had a collection of old planes stored on the base, and invited a group of us to have a look, he had a Vulcan, 2 Venoms, and 2 Vampires, I can’t remember which, but one of them was 2 variants. He was quite an old bloke, and he told us that they were restored and maintained by some local black guys, who were going to get them when he died. I wonder sometimes what happened to them, perhaps the Vulcan ended up doing barrel rolls over Grantham!

    Paul Cushion:
Dave Mason That’s nonesense. No Vulcan has ever been retired to Rhodesia.

    Dave Mason:
Paul Cushion it’s fact, it was there me and several others saw it, were they ever used by the Rhodesian Air Force? Could it have come from there to here? Is there anything else that looks like it?

I did this in Photoshop a while back. Show Clyde B. EAST’S ‘Lil Margaret’ RTB after a mission. I got two 18×12 prints done of it and met Clyde in California. He signed mine and I gave him the other. He was very happy with it ๐Ÿ™‚

Sam Hardy from Kinver and who was a Sergeant in the Worcester Yeomanry and who took part in Operation Varsity, returns to the inside of a Horsa Glider stirring memories of how his glider crash landed at came to a skidding halt next to a group of 60 German soldiers. What he didn’t realise at the time was that they had been taken prisoner by Americans shortly before. If they hadn’t, the Glider he was in would have been destroyed by an 88mm Cannon they were manning next to the landing area.

Al McLean, Curator of the RAF Cosford Museum (when the image was taken) looks over bullet and cannon damage in the fuselage of a Handeley Page Hampden bomber which was bought down in Finland in 1942 by Me 109 fighters.
A gunner and navigator were killed but the pilot bought the plane down into a pete bog, but during the landing broke both his legs. The Co-pilot was ordered to try and reach the safety of Switzerland but was captured by the germans who also took the pilot prisoner. Both served out the war in a POW camp. The plane was bought back to the UK in 1992 and then to the museum in 2002.

Could be worse I suppose. Here’s a great example of a commentator destroying the great sounds of the Me-262, Mustang and B-17 all in one fell swoop in Texas!

    So to sum up:

In order that a very few people can record tinny representations of aircraft engines we need

    1) Intelligent commentators
    2) A PA free zone to be moved around the airfield dependent on the light at that time of day
    3) Silenced digital shutters
    4) No starting up or taxiing of aircraft whilst others are flying
    5) Gags for all people under the age of 18
    6) A wifi system broadcasting what commentary there is to the smartphones of those whose batteries haven’t run out yet
    7) A strict rule that smartphones and airband radios can only be used with fully soundproof headsets
    8) Translation of the expected commentary into multiple languages for foreign visitors
    9) A roof over naughty fields to protect those who can’t cope with the same light conditions as everyone else from falling aircraft
    10) A strict ‘no talking’ rule for when aircraft are flying
    11) Silent food only. No rustling crisp bags or sweet wrappers, crushing drink cans or crunching plastic water bottles.

    Does that cover it?

    Moggy

Let me know where this show is and I’ll buy tickets in a shot.

I am surprised none of our commentator allergic members have made mention of the not infrequent interruptions of the sounds of the airborne aircraft being drowned out by the taxying aircraft at Duxford, which also drown out the PA as well as their video soundtrack!!

That’s because it is the sound of an aircraft, close up and personal……it is an aircraft at an airshow…..yes, irritating but it belongs there. Blah, blah, blah……and you will listen to everything I say as you can’t avoid the PA system. ….is not what I want to hear and from other posts in this thread I am not alone in this thought.
