Yes, this is the same place. Excellent link. Many thanks. He did serve with them during the Tunis period so this ties in perfectly. The footage that follows the graveyard clip is a huge military procession through streets with some camel riders, a huge French military March past, US March past (with two black painted Sherman tanks), it almost looks like a victory parade? It may well be. The footage also shows some 325th pilots (not in flight uniform) looking over a German graveyard (black crosses on headstones) but no names can be seen. It’s a really fascinating hour of footage.

As I said above, when I get the chance I’ll upload some clips of footage. Cheers, MP

🙂

Strong possibility, but this image before said ID appeared.

I agree, the last 4 are same.

No, also Hs-129, last 4 same.
Others seem to be Ju-52’s

Interesting possibilities.
Although Sally would have to be shipped by boat, would not have range to fly.

I recently saw new image of Sally on web, cant find it now (saved image)
Here is artist rendering, apparently wrong coloUr.

MP, can I get permission to use that image for future project?

Yes of-course. When I get a chance I will upload the brief video clip of it that shows both sides as it was filmed by the pilot while taxiing his P-47 past it 🙂

So the same argument you are happy to go to the cinema then have someone talking or children screaming all the way through the film, after all it ‘s put on for the general public.

Careful, next thing you know you’ll be wrong about that too 🙁

Yes, but just because you have to have a PA system, you don’t have to have a constant commentary or music.

Beautifully summed up 🙂

Although you could get away from it. Or very nearly at Eastbourne.

I wonder if anyone has ever approached Duxford, for their take on commentators ?

Their reply would no doubt be along the lines of, “Nobody has complained, so that must mean that the majority of people are happy with the status quo”

Not having been to Duxford on an airshow day for about 30yrs, do they fill the gaps with loud music ?

No, there are no gaps, just Chabbert! There were two small breaks from him. The first was the Manhatten Dolls singing over the B-17 and P-51’s flypast. The other was some dreadful rendition (from memory) Bolero with a bloke saying the notes, literally ‘Da, D D D Daaaa, Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, Daaaa. ……etc, etc. Reminded me of the B side from a K-Tel record of the 70’s done by tribute act. 🙁

And I genuinely don’t believe many of the crowdline or naughty-field amateurs actually sit at home and play the recordings on their big screen tele and sound bar each Saturday night for entertainment.

Moggy

Well as for the audio being Crap on the video, there isn’t much point lugging around all the heavy sound recording kit if you aren’t airside and away from the tannoy system, so let’s not try and compare this to a professional production which the FL team do more than adequately and sell their DVD/Blu-Rays from. The point it, there is no point in taking ‘quality’recording equipment if all you can hear is the commentator over the aircraft.

Maybe I shall try the naughty fields next-year and be pilloried for it…..but at-least I’ll be able to capture the audio and video but won’t dare share them here…..I mean it wouldn’t be anyone else’s fault that I voted with my feet?

We have always been aware of a strong antipathy to air show commentary from a select number of members here.

I too occasionally find it irritating but not to the extent of spoiling my enjoyment. If it did I wouldn’t go, a decision some here have made.

I doubt that, in the absence of a few hundred or more complaints, air show organisers are likely to change anything. So those unhappy with things as they are will either have put up with it or vote with their feet.

As with anything we have free choice about, we can choose not to be angered and annoyed by not participating.

But then this is exactly the opposite of what someone interested in aircraft not commentators should do. I have paid the premium to attend and support the show by buying a Gold Pass. I haven’t sat on the verges or stepped into the surrounding fields but I have travelled miles to see and hear the aircraft. Currently I see but don’t (often) hear the aircraft due to as heard in my video the constant wittering on and on by (at Legends) two blokes having a chat on open mics, talking as though we are interested in what they have to say when the aircraft are performing and obliterating the sounds of these aircraft. Why? Why does it have to be like this? We have the technology to allow radios, mobiles, Bluetooth, wireless, etc, etc devices tune into the commentary but for some reason we just getting massive speakers blaring out this constant talking.

So, the only respite is to vote with my feet? Yet, should I venture off the airfield and become a freeloader…wow….then the berating would start. Why should I not be able to experience the sights and sounds of the wonderful aircraft without voting with my feet and heading to a field?

It’s so disappointing that it’s an airshow and yet it just turns into a commentators show with some background noise of aircraft interrupting the diatribe.

I’m sure Chabbert is a lovely chap but when he is destroying the sounds of the aircraft I have paid £160 to view over two days…..he is anything but that to me!

Maybe I should start a poll to see if people would pay extra to keep the commentator away!?

If your reply was to my post “CreakingDoor”, it would be a start!

I’ve never freeloader and it’s not something I considered until this year’s FL. I like shooting video and like recording the sound of the aircraft. The thing that a lot of these airshow venues don’t seem to get is that I attend ( I was going to use the word ‘we’ but decided against it as it could be used as a ‘why are you speaking for me argument’…..annnnnywayyy) these airshows because I want to see these aircraft and HEAR these aircraft. I don’t live near an historic airfield that hosts WW2 aircraft displays and I travel approx. 200 miles to visit FL. I spend my money in the Eagle Pub, buy food at local pubs, stay in a B&B for the duration, in effect, I contribute to the local economy while the show runs.

So as I stand at Duxford and wait for the show to start, you have to appreciate that I rarely get the chance to experience what an airfield sounded like during WW2. I do appreciate the people running the airshow are there for the week that the aircraft arrive (and those who work there obviously longer) and get to hear some awesome sounds, but I am not. I have a few short hours over the weekend to experience the sights and sounds of WW2 and as part of my hobby I like to record it.

So I have paid since I started attending the show, I have made my donation…….but Christ alive……this year’s commentary was inane, continual, sustained and bloody annoying. It never stopped. On and on and on. I mean last-year (2014) I think Chabbert couldn’t make it. The standing guy was heard often saying ‘let’s just take a moment and listen to those engines’. Brilliant! Thanks! He gets it, he really does.

The airshow for me is about seeing and hearing these aircraft. Sure, explain what they are and what they did when they leave the flight line and circle around. That’s understandable, people who are first time visitors or want to learn about the aircraft…great. But when the aircraft are actually flying past, rolling high above, doing the display…..please SHUT UP!

Here’s the video I shot at this year’s FL. Common theme? BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!

https://vimeo.com/133440490

So am I tempted by the naughty field? Yes I really am. The commentary absolutely ruins this event for me and standing in the naughty field would allow me to experience sights and sounds that are just impossible with the current commentator.

Easy way to make me happy (would have again used ‘us’ but daren’t) add a pound to the entry fee for everyone and use it to lock the microphone away or at-least send Chabbert to Australia a long way from the mic!

Just out of interest, as we live in a social media age, why isn’t here an airshow app which would display realise information. So as an aircraft prepares to perform the app could say what aircraft was coming in, link to info about the aircraft, history of it, etc, etc and give an option to hear direct commentary if people want to hear it.

The commentator is the only thing that would drive me to the naughty fields. Nothing else.

Maybe I should start a poll to see if people would pay extra to keep the commentator away!?

Is there any news on the Pilot’s condition? Haven’t been reading the papers and haven’t seen any headlines/reports on his condition?

As much as I feel it will be fruitless, it does make me wonder just how many plane wrecks (or parts) they make uncover in the search. Maybe tbey’ll find a crate of 20+ Spitfires buried in the sand that were dumped off a ship on the way to Burma 🙂

Well having supported the event by buying a Gold Pass there isn’t much choice with the marquee 🙁

Makes me wonder about heading off into the surrounding fields like some of the other freeloaders……but how would that help the museum raise funds.

Just makes me wonder why they don’t ask the public on the forum if they would rather have minimal factual commentary or lots of inane banter drowning out the aircraft……but hey…..apparently I can go somewhere else……but why should I have to?

Go somewhere else. Where I’m standing I hear nothing from the commentators.’

Anyway, anyone happen to have any photos/video of The Shark from its Thursday practise display shortly after 6pm? Could you get in touch with me at toridar@norwegianspitfire.com?

Absolutely 100% agree. I have attended for three years (my first in 2013) and that year I nearly didn’t bother coming back again.

Look, I go to an airshow to see and HEAR the aircraft. When 12 Spitfires take off I want to try and see/hear what it must have been like so many years ago on an airfield like this.

But what do we get…..BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, JABBER, JABBER, JABBER, INANE WAFFLE…..and a few interesting facts.

In 2014 the french guy wasn’t there and low and behold the commentator said ‘I’ll be quiet now so we can hear these wonderful engines”…..and he did it again and again and it was great!

This year, here we go again…..BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….inane banter and a few facts.

Look, how hard can it be.

“Next to appear we have the Mustang approaching from the left”…..aircraft race over field, engines screaming, crowd in admiration. As they pull away “the P-51 was originally built with an Alinson engine but shortly after the Rols Royce merlin was fitted and from that day on it became an exceptional fighter aircraft”……aircraft race across the field……..”used as a long range escorts for Bombers, they were affectionately known as ‘little friends’ by their charges and often stayed with a badly damaged bomber as they fell behind the main group and we’re liable to be picked off by the enemy looking for easy targets”……aircraft over and around the field……etc, etc.

I go to an airshow to hear the aircraft as-well as see them and it seems this particular commentator thinks he is the star of the show……it’s just bloody frustrating and I wish his tenure was up!

Anyway, here is some video I shot at the show and using a directional microphone I managed to nullify him somewhat, but even watching this clips (22 mins total) you can hear rabbiting on when he really shouldn’t, especially the Blenheim flyby!

https://vimeo.com/133440490

Really enjoyed the show again, re-enactor, aircraft lineup, meeting old friends. Apart from the BLAH, BLAH…..it was a great show as always 🙂

Cheers, MP

PS…..and yes he mentioned the ashtray story 🙁
