While not be-littling the BoB and the sterling efforts of all British and Commomwealth land, sea and airforces culminating in the 8th armys successes in North Africa, are you seriously suggesting that the UK would have prevailed if it was not for initially Lend Lease and then the USA,s joining into WW2.

As I mentioned in my previous reply, I do not want to get political here. I thought I would just mention that a Phantom was being scrapped 😉

All to familiar is it not, the echo of the ongoing castration of the UK aircraft industry by Uncle Sam, ‘Doffs Cap and Wretches In Same’ But a contract is just that and the small print says it all,

Sadly the Uk will continue in this rut untill our government finally learns to tell the White House to get stuffed and rebuilds it’s aircraft manufacturing base once again. ‘Hastily studies small print to establish the dollar value that comment is about to cost me’.

Fair point – but having first hand experianced of the MOD airframe disposal policy over the years, the reality is that pen pushers and clerks will rub their hands with joy when faced with an opportunity to stamp struck of charge – scrapped “ as opposed to any protracted documentation paper chase in releasing an airframe to a civilian organisation or individual. It takes about one minute paperwork to ” write off ” 100 Phantoms to the scrappy. That compared to several months if not years ( MOD official reaction / response / paperwork time ) to sell same quota of airframes off.

If you can bolt some obscure and probably long lapsed treaty “excuse” for such action, it means Pimms all round early in the Whitehall MOD asset disposal staff bar.

I do not think the American give a monkeys about a few ( by US standards ) pre-owned aircraft. After all, the guys who knocked up the origional sale / agreement to the RAF / Royal Navy gave these Phantoms a second thought after disposal.

Nope, a lack of interest by our own people with the capability to preserve has been the cause of the extinction of many, many more airframes than anything else. Lets start with the Halifax, Hampden, etc etc.

Finally, not geting political here, but it sems to be popular culture to knock Uncle Sam for any reason of late. Last I looked we were still on the same team re: Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

And if it was not for the USA we may be discussing ( or more likely wispering quietly ) the disposal of Luftwaffe airframes on Luftwaffe bases in the UK!

I recal that when a large number of Phantoms were scrapped at St Athan in the mid 90,s the scrap metal / aircraft dealers had quite a bit of trouble when they swapped a complete forward fuselage / cockpit for another airframe with the long defunct Wales Aircraft Museum. They had to return it to S A and it had to frag it in front of the MOD police. I understand that then the MOD started to review the fate of the airframes that had already been claimed as “reduced to produce” – leaving a lott of dissapointed UK collectors who were expecting a delivery of a Phantom Phrunt end !

Incidently, they replaced the Phantom cockpit in the swap deal with a Ferret Armoued car !

Not long after the museum went belly up !

    Thank you Les,

I have not seen that one before. What colours would the underside have been? I see the upper surfaces are the old Bomber Command gloss black and grey but I am not familiar with the undersides.

PS – Does anyone have any cockpit pics of her, especially in Gatow ?

    Thanks

    Hello All,

I have dozens of pics of St Athan yard circa 1990-95. Several marks of Canberra, Harriers, JP,s Phantoms, VC10, the odd Jag etc. Also, many pics of the defunct Wales Aircraft Museum, both active and in death. Quite a few of Nevs yard at Bruntingthorpe. Also, a few of various Maltese scrappers of the same time including the Connie, DC3, etc.

In all probably a couple of hunderd different pics. If only I knew how to transfer em the my pc!!!

    One day I guess.

PS……I,m trying to locate some information of my old Canberra cockpit WP515. I understand its at Gatow?
