Pakistan needs ‘high-performance’ aircraft, says Karamat

WASHINGTON, Dec 17: Pakistan needs ‘high-performance’ aircraft and will need to make ‘alternative arrangements’ if it fails to get the F-16s from the United States, says Ambassador Jehangir Karamat.

Pakistan’s newly appointed envoy to Washington also dispelled the impression that Islamabad may end up allowing US and other international inspectors into its nuclear installations to probe the allegations that Dr A.Q. Khan had supplied uranium enrichment equipment to Iran.

“We have drawn a line where we thought we needed to and nobody will be allowed to cross this line,” said Mr Karamat. While welcoming the US decision to offer a $1.2 billion arms package to Pakistan, the former army chief said that “arms alone cannot make a country stable, we also need a stable economy for that.”

The ambassador, who presented his credentials to President George W. Bush earlier this month, expressed these views at his first meeting with Washington-based Pakistani journalists on Thursday evening.

Although it was an informal meeting, Mr Karamat also spoke on major issues confronting the country such as Pakistan’s defence needs, relations with the United States and the peace process in South Asia.

The ambassador said he did not understand why India says that the proposed US arms package for Pakistan will disturb the balance of power in South Asia. “We believe the US military assistance will strengthen our defence without causing any harm to India.”

Ambassador Karamat said Pakistan needs “high performance aircraft” and if “we fail to get the F-16s (from the United States), we will have to make alternative arrangements.”

He said Pakistan already has three P-3 Orion planes, which are used for maritime surveillance, and under the proposed arms package we will get three more. He rejected some media reports as incorrect that the United States had not supplied proper avionics with the first batch of P-3 Orion planes and that was why those planes were being used for transportation only.

“They have all proper equipment and are being used for surveillance, not transportation,” said the ambassador, adding that Pakistan was acquiring more P-3s because “we need them.”

Mr Karamat said he believes the US military assistance to Pakistan would not be stopped unlike what had happened after the 1965 war and again after the Afghan war in 1990.

In the 1960s, he said, the Americans were very clear that the weapons they had given to Pakistan were meant to be used against the Soviet Union and not India and “when we used them against India, they stopped the supplies”.

In 1990, he said, the supplies were stopped because of the dispute over Pakistan’s nuclear programme. “This time it is different. Today there’s no cold war. America has separate relationships with both India and Pakistan. And nobody knows when this war against terror would end, 5 years, 10, years, 15 years.”

Besides, he said, it’s not just the military assistance but the United States was also providing assistance to improve the national economy and fight poverty, which indicated a much deeper engagement.

Ambassador Karamat said that even in areas of concern, Pakistan and the United States had a convergence of views. It’s in the interest of both the countries to fight those who continue to bomb civilian targets, he added. Pakistan, he said, was also seeking to considerably improve its trade with the United States and is engaged in negotiations for a free trade agreement.

How did all these planes managed to decieve the Radars and Air defences?

By flying low??..I mean..thats it? any electronic counter-measures..(even that could trigger an alert…)

Is there any reports that other countries even got a hint about the strike until offcourse the strike…(apart from the Jordanian King one…[is that really true!?])

Also..What defences did Iraq had, and say if Iraqis got information that Israelis are incomming, y3ni they got alerted, and also the Israelis knew that they know..what would have been the Iraqi retaliation or defensive measures…and how would have it ended up…

    TY

Wouldnt it be logistically “not good” to support two different kinds of Early Warning Planes!. y3ni the enitre network would need to support two different kinds of data instead of one. Also if the deal goes through, there is hardly any funds left for “Advanced F-16s” and hell nobody wants PAF “buying” F-16s for itself, We should use the funds from US obligation. And use our money to get some other 4rth Gen plane.

abey Pak Thundaar, in the guise of posting, you’re again started flaming another Indian thread. and then you cry “Webmaster, webmaster”, when you are you ilk are called what they really are. nobody asked you to comment on whether or not we purchase anything from the US. yet you do, out of nothing but ill-will and spite. so then, when your intentinos are so clear, why ask others to post proper replies ?

He did not start the flame, there was nothing offensive on what he posted until you’re freind or maybe him/you did this:

well pakthunder, india is not really interested in peanuts like bullet proof jackets for COIN forces, USED C-130, USED AH-1, USED . so yes, not much will be purchased. we also PAY for our purchased not roll over and do the wuff wuff MNNA thing for free baksheesh.

You know like insulting several countries in one go. Maybe someone needs to have basic Econimc lessons, since US war in Afghanistan, its costed Pak wayy more than what USA is offering. Heroin production is high –> High negative externalities –> High Social Economic costs, then there is trade etc etc, (and oh the cost of cleaning the terrorists USA funded, + they sanctioned us), so what USA is offering is peanuts indeed. Its not Baksheesh, its something long overdue, and its not being return in full, quite the opposite of what indian1973 says.

H.Khan posted a piece of news and said that it was from a particular source. I conclusively proved that no such news existed. The man is a liar, period.

Heh, you couldnt even find one other piece of news from that particular news source ;).

    [QUOTE=Nitin_V]

Nazi’s to the west. Wow! poor Nazis cant compare to the Islamic ubermenschen! What rhetoric! I am impressed.

Word games word games..I was reffering to Ballistic missiles, and you brought something out your magic hat. Actually it doesnt matters you’re karna or not, You do things *ditto* like him…thats wat matters.

If wishes were horses….there are certain things called upgrades and mid life updates which skewer your wildly optimistic predictions.

and there is a thing called limit, el eye em eye tee. well, widly optimistic predictions from me indeed, given the poor record of migs, lets hope they start replacing earlier.

After going to every nation and wailing about lost honour and dignity and how essential F16’s were to salvage their national pride.

??? Honour and dignity isnt lost in asking what belongs to someone, especially if one has paid for it.

The Indian “lobby” does its job. That is, lobby to make sure the Pakistani dictatorship does not get its hands on any weapons. Deal with it.

Offcourse its directed by someone. Heh we’re dealing with it…and so far its working out fine.

    your mythical bird

    first..looks like mig-21, then photoshoppend, not mythical/

Guys can we keep this Griffen based
    Nitin
could u please ignore previously banned memebrs who have managed to get themselves reincarnated in newer avatars?

and who do you think Karna, oh I mean Nitin is?

Kim Jong Il is the source of high technology to Pak. Wow!

Just like Nazis to the West. You should be saying wow, there ballistic missile programs were and may are more advanced than yours.

Fact is IAF knows its in a mess (replacing migs), they order today or tommorow, the planes will come in similar time frame as LCAs, at best rates..there might only be 100-150..or being extremely optimistic..say 200 units replacements for much more number of Migs. Either they’ll all get bo-kata, or will be grounded.

Unlike the PAF chief who crawls from capital to capital with a begging bowl for what else but decade old F16’S? Sheeesh!

PAF Cheif said its a bonus, besides, its the Indian lobby begging not to sell “old” was it? F-16s. Despite Pakistan’s “useless acquisitions”

And the same ones which speak of FC1= 80% of F16! LOL!

LOL indeed, FC-1 can blast the hell out of early BVR-less F-16s. (and thats where the comparison is against, not block 60), and no we dont make wild comparisons, unlike…*cough* flanker vs raptor…

Actually, I still think the RD-33 is currently best option, M-88-3 has a while to go and will be COSTLY, putting in any American engine will require a overwrite of the FBW and such. There is the 10000kg RD-43 which can also be put into the FC-1. This engine is planed for SMT-II/-III upgrade for the Mig-29.

IF they arent supllying -93, they’d not supply RD-43 also.
