So sad. Thanks for what you did Bob. I hope you knew we were grateful.
Now that’s a service record…RIP.
This has been done to death many times on here and the general opinion seems to have been there was little to chose between the two and the overriding factors in success in combat were tactics and support.
Hi Clio – you go ahead and ask what you want. Some people don’t appreciate that there are new forumites joining all the time, and some have similar interests. I personally will never tire of the Spitfire v Me109 debate, something new might pop up from time to time. Free speech and all that, I’m sure the Few don’t mind us regurgitating old debates and discussions. I know that one or two would encourage it, so we never forget.
So, ask away!:D I think a German pilot in a 109 with Spanish Civil War experience against a sprog Spitfire pilot is a no-hoper, then a Hurricane ace against a sprog 109 pilot might be similar. A good friend, now deceased, told me that he ‘turned for my life one afternoon, round and round, until the yellow-nosed ****** dropped out of the turn in a stall. I dropped my nose and ran like hell for Mummy, nearly diving into the drink in the process’.
Personally, I would have preferred to be in a Spitfire. Sqn Ldr Paul Day dropped himself into the cockpit of a 109 and his first words were: ‘Good Lord!’.;)
Bad show. You don’t know:
1. If the next of kin have been informed and,
2. What other considerations are required.
The fact that you posted this shows you have the ‘heads up’ so why ask about Andy’s recovery when I’m sure he will post the details here in due course? Ask him direct if you want, but to shout from the roof tops in the ‘I’ll be the first with the news’ mentality is not good. You even got the date wrong 😡
This link relating to the recent funeral of ‘Lacy’ Smith may be of interest:
http://www.cwgc.org/news.asp?newsid=222&view=yes
Rather spine-tingling, but on 19 April, and just as I was working on the chapter about Smith for the forthcoming “Finding The Fallen”, I was drawn outside by the sound of a Merlin overhead. A solitary Spitfire flew directly over me, headed towards France. I now realise it was off to Smith’s funeral.
I believe that young man was saying something to you Andy . . . thanks, probably.
Hi Graham – nah, too stressful!:)
Best,
Andy.
Awsome – a post with no replies for two days then gets 47 replies running to two pages. That’s the power of ‘negative advertising’ :diablo:! Fantastic to see such passion and Graham got the attention and interest his post deserved. I hope the weekend goes well.:D
Best,
Andy.
It’s time to let the Battle rest now. We’ll probably lose the rest of the vets this year and it’s so long ago, the youth don’t care or know, and it should slide quietly away into the history books like Trafalgar and Crecy. Even the bottom has dropped out of the Aviation art market. People aren’t interested anymore except a handful of people of web forums . . .
Nige,
The airframe was de-registered by the CAA in 2007. Hope his helps.
ps. perhaps we could have a re-dedication by Geoff Wellum??
Hi Andy,
I saw the Spit prop last year with my two boys and it is in bad condition. It is flakey and the edges of the blades are blurred. I live in Truro and am well up for a rescue op:D
I’ve uploaded the photo to my wife’s Flickr account where it can be seen by everyone – it really is an atmospheric picture . . .
Just found this thread . . . I have a photo of McFie and his groundcrew standing infront of P8651 in the summer sun. I’ll gen-up on posting pics and post it here:D
Best joke I ever read:D
Yeah try this
Kill me now! – This is the Internet, it’s being taken far too seriously!:D
