I was going to wait till i retire to build one of these but i might start abit earlier judging by the build times!
I dont think they were happy with the B17 dig, specially when parts turned up already out and on show at a local museum!
the spit dig in France was spot on with a great excavation and recovery.
cheers
abit of good work tonight, thanks for all the help! 😀
cheers for that
i dont suppose if anyone has a better picture of an intact one?
looks spot on to me!
The metal bracket looks the same, i think im missing part of it.
the front mechanism looks right also.
cheers for that. 😀
Ive had abit look on
http://www.hawkertempest.se/
which is a great site and i think im understanding how it would of worked.
im not sure about the orientation but i think the pics are upside down at least.
the end with the mechanism would of fitted into a metal loop on the bomb?
with the V bracket to brace against the bomb?
also for aerodynamics it would of been enclosed in a metal housing?
do you think im close?????????
100% Tempest V found.
well it makes sense with the mechanism part and is the only idea ive got.

Thats a shame, i hope they are still looking after them.
If there is no room what about a photo catalogue of what they found for the public to view?
So is the Lanc on display then?
the recovery seems to be well documented.
Down at the museum today, looking very good indeed.
i can see the extra bits from the military vehicle museum in place which adds to it all.
top hanger is looking very clean and tidy with the sea venom in place.
sabre is looking mint but abit of a shame with the lightning out of the way still.
people need to go down and show some support and spend some money.
cracking job by all!:D
ive thought about this from time to time having a relative on the runnymede memorial.
facts are the english channel is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, i cant see anything much being left except the largest bits of metal on the bottom and there will be no bodies left to recover.
i have a shipping map for the channel and it is greatly detailed with info, there are alot of wreck icons on the map but what they refer to is unknown.

I hear yer Lindy’s lad
you might find something, the only chance is the embankment that it hit, you might find bits left from that area. but youve already answered the problem the area has been heavily redeveloped. the answer to private land question is i think the crash area falls into a couple of people’s back garden and an area of public footpath before the golf course.
there is a nice plaque but up in a street to the south of the crash site.
it is interesting going of the old maps and sketches ive seen of the area that there could be some of the embankment in place that the walkway went over.
I made my comparison research using this great web page http://www.ryhope-village.co.uk/vinegar_hill.htm
Fred Carr is done a brilliant job of bringing this area back to 1944 its amazing to see how much the area has changed.
i fancy a pop down just to compare what it looks like now.

Barton crash site
I was checking this out last week, i believe the crash site is at the end of Leatham St, Ryhope Colliery.
You can still see some of the earthworks on google maps that the big walkway went over into the streets from the colliery. The halifax partly destroyed this walkway and the colliery house destoyed is someone’s back garden now.

I like popping on this site and finding links to digs with pictures and reports, and its great that they seem to be all done pretty professionally.
My original thread was based on the idea of a amnesty where digs in the past that have disappeared again into time could be found and catalogued.
Some found sites are now lost and could dug up items and there history be slowly being lost in some one’s draw or garage or storage.
I’m sure there will be others in a similar position then me and will probably continue to be, who are re finding sites and wish to learn what was previously taken, not to own but just to be able to present the best detailed report they can.
Is it worth giving it a shot? we don’t have anything to loose, we could only gain.
