Matters not that Canberras were splashed by Harriers, the question posed was “Most Cost Effective Multi-Role Jet Aircraft”. In answer to this question the Canberra surely has no equal.

    .

SteveO has beaten me to it! My original post wasn’t specific enough as the RAF harriers also flew during Operation Corporate.

Sea Harrier… developed from an exisiting design…. shot down cerca 20 aircraft during the Falklands conflict ( yes, the updated missiles from the US helped), operated in a multi-role format over the Balkans and provided recon and even straffing of targets in Sierra Leone. Don’t know what the cost of development was, but I’m sure that neither BAe or Rolls Royce had to start from scratch. The avionics suite was possibly one area where the cost may have an issue ( Ferranti Radar, etc) however, the kit worked. Recommend reading the Sharky Ward book for an insight into how good it was on an air-toair basis.

On the subject… was the Canberra ever designed to be an air superiority aircraft… I always thought it to be a bomber first and foremost.. and therefore not ‘multirole’ as per the original question.

Doe’s not that ugly slow Harrier even raise a stiff upper lip in this question!!.

I think the Harrier Vs Canberra question is one of the few that has been answered in a combat situation:

2 Canberras were (Easily) downed or forced to crash in the Falklands conflict, with the loss of 3 Argentine crew… despite this, the Argentines continued to fly the Canberra until 2000….

I think also that in terms of production numbers vs kills the Harrier may well be the most sucessful jet fighter ever produced…..

    Now there’s a thought! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Further to Mark12ยดs visit.

I happened to be walking past the museum in Santiago this morning… like you do!

Been a few changes since your visit, including the appearance of a Canberra and the reorganisation/ hangaring of the derlicts. I need to call the museum again later but there may be some interesting news coming from Los Cerrillos airfield in the near future! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Iยดll post some updated pictures as soon as I can.

Wrong Wrong Wrong APC104… teach me to try and be clever…! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Are there any FLYING Spits that have not had a major overhaul and are not a rebuild project – ie not been taken apart since the original build date?

Sticking his neck out he says

Hasn’t MH434 also being flying for all these years without a major overhaul… the warbird version of a civil C or D Check… if so the very nice man from the CAA must really like Mr Hanna!

    Cheers for the advise!

Does anyone know if the Nikon has a similar function to the Canon for tracking a fast moving object and maintaining focus?

Purely from reading reviews and talking to friends the Nikon option is looking slightly stronger, despite the lower Pixel count.

Any advise on a good zoom lense that will allow me to produce results at airshows, but also fit the holiday/ general use bracket quite well?

    Tar! ๐Ÿ˜‰

On a similar note are there any ex-RAF F4’s out there that could be put back in the sky and operated in a similar manner – ie a revenue earner. I recall the US placed certain constraints on the use of F4s after the RAF had used them… any ideas?

Picture of the bomb bay. As you will see, the internal mechanics are in excellent condition, as is the birds nest on the right hand side ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

A Vulcan… A Buccaneer… all on the horizon.. fair enough they were all flying 15 years ago, but it would still be good to see them up in the air again.

Strange how just metres on the other side of those railings is the ‘Rio De La Plata’, the massive tidal estuary of the River Plate where the Graf Spey was sunk.

I wonder how another Avro product, the Vulcan, would have coped in this environment, reference Blackpool, although clearly not an appropriate exhibit.

    Mark

I just happened to be passing through B.A. on Saturday and popped along to see the aircraft in the new hangar space.

With regards the aircraft being outside… I’ll try to post an image to answer that question in a couple of days….. ๐Ÿ˜€

    Eddy,

Not sure as Iยดm stuck in Brazil at the moment sunning it up ๐Ÿ˜€ , but the local papers in Southport and Blackpool normally have a listing.

Also, why go to the posh part of Liverpool ๐Ÿ˜‰ when you can catch the airframes on the ground and within a finger tips reach at Blackpool Squires Gate. I went down there last year… hours of fun. The pilots sit in the public cafe at the airport and openly chat to who ever may venture their way. You might even get invited to look around the non-RAF kit thatยดs parked up on the apron. Take a decent pair of Binos and you can see the display from the non-scouse side of the Ribble….

Some time ago, when I was working for certain publishing company, I had a call from a guy that reckoned he was making a remake of 633 and was going to make the sequal/sequals. He told me he was in the process of making a whole squadron of Mosquitos for the film and even told me they would be easy because they were wood.

    He was very insistent.

I decided he was a twit.

I spoke to the same fella while working for a certain aviation related business back in 2001. He claimed to have several hollywood studios interested in the rights to a 633 sequel, foillowing the success of several WWII films in recent years. He said that they would need at least 3 airframes to film the movie, all of which would be authentic rebuild projects.

He also claimed to know the whereabouts of a Lancaster that had remained hidden on a hillside somewhere and that could be rebuilt to flying condition, and he was in talks with certain well known collectors about a finders fee.

He started to bore me after a while…. still.. you never know…
