In case some of you haven’t seen the Messerspit/Schmittfire hybrid aircraft:-
    http://www.unrealaircraft.com/hybrid/images/Hdbspit_1.jpeg

Spitfire Vb, with DB605 engine, Me110 cowling (Aparantly similar firewall to spitfire), and Me109G prop… It also outperformed both the Spitfire V and the 109G!

More info can be found here:- Not a bad site either! Some other crazy Hybrids here too.

    Thanks JDK.

Looks like the subject has been well discussed. Sorry, another newbie who needs to learn to use the SEARCH button first!

B-17 MAN, how is your project progressing?

Was very impressed with the pics of the B-17 cockpit replica! Any new ones?

    Hi Jules,

I’ve been enjoying reading this thread!

I was wondering if any of your crew were credited with downing any enemy fighters during your missions?

    I’ve read of a few…

Before WW2, Finland received some aircraft from Britain and US (Hurricanes and Brewster Buffalos etc.) They then sided with Germany after the Germans invaded Russia. The Buffalos apparantly shot down dozens of Russian Hurricanes, though there’s no evidence of Hurricane Vs Hurricane (also were in combat with Russian P39’s etc etc)…

After WW2, Israel aquired ex-RAF Spitfires, which fought against Egyptian Spitfires during 1949 middle-east tensions. Israeli Spitfires accounted for 4 Egyptian Spitfires…

    Just an update…

Sorry Kiwis, but the Spitfire XVI is now Temora’s (and Australia’s) 2nd flying Spit. It’s here already, and due to fly in September.

As for events, Temora has a very decent flying display every 5 or so weeks. Check out Aug 5 & 6 if you can! Including:-

    4 x F18 Hornet formation displays, plus/including (?) 1 static & 1 solo ‘high-energy’ display.
Tiger moth, Wirraway, Canberra, Vampire, Dragonfly, Spitfire, Meteor, PLUS visiting Mustang, P40 and Boomerang! (Not sure on the Hudson…)

Sounds like a great event! But, yes, Still too far for most of the country…

‘Irian Jaya’, the left half of the island of ‘New Guinea’ is indonesian run. The right half is known as ‘Papua New Guinea’. They are separate countries. PNG was Australian governed, until it was given back to the people to ‘run’. (A somewhat debateable concept..)

Im sure someone will correct me, or give a better picture of things!

Take note of this line though…

“The aircraft has been externally painted (2005) since the photos were taken.”

How old are the photos? What’s it like NOW??

At a guess, TB863 may well stay in it’s current paint sceme. It is now in it’s original colours from when it was delivered to 453 Sqn RAAF. Not sure if FU-P was it’s original designation though…

So, I think they might keep it as is, since it represents an Australian a/c already…

So it’s not just me? I made an effort to get to the Australian War Memorial to see the Lancaster and friends. I should have taken a flood light! Way too dark! Not to mention the Lancaster’s tail up in the air, and 3 feet from the wall… I particularly wanted to see that damn rear turret… oh well…

I didn’t get a turn in the cockpit! As teacher/supervisor, I HAD to let the kids go first! It was all good anyway.

Nice site! I also have been there. I was teaching at an international school in Bangkok, and an American teacher and I decided to take our two classes on a field trip to the Air Force Museum. Not for the kids sake I must admit!

Most of their collection seemed in very good condition. The Spitfire and Bearcat almost seemed as though they were ready for a grease and oil change and a flight!

Some of the Thais are very superstitious. An engineer was telling the kids ghost stories, such as the Helldiver’s dead pilot (as it was found) still ‘being with the aircraft’. After a close look at the plane, a number of very freaked out girls came running from it screaming!! They were convinced they saw something!! Bit spooky.

Ending the day having lunch in the back of the C123 was something different too!

You guys will have to wait until a certain book comes out.

    Do tell!
Is this a ‘Spitfires in Australia’ type book, or one of more ‘restoration’ type content? (either would be good, though!)
