A couple of years ago, the “other magazine” published an impressive list of warbirds (fighters, bombers and other assorted attack aircraft) that had actual, proven combat records.
Since then, of course, more warbirds have flown, so I thought it might be a good idea to update/amend the list!
So, to start us off….
TFC Hawk 75
FHC Bf109E
Ed Russell’s Bf109E-7
Spitfire IIa P7350
Spitfire VB AB910
Spitfire VC AR501
Spitfire VC AR614
Spitfire VB BL628
Spitfire VB BM597
Spitfire VB EP120
Spitfire Vc JG891
Spitfire VIIIc MT719 (I think?)
Spitfire IX MH434
Spitfire IXc MK732
Spitfire Tr.IX ML407
Spitfire IXe ML417(a bit of variety!)
TFC P-40B (I think??)
B-17G “Pink Lady”I remember a Catalina being on the list as well….
Come on, chaps, chip in! 🙂

The B-25 Mitchell used in the “Battle of Britain” Film is now in dismantled storage owned by a very well known preservation person and seems to be quite complete. It had sat mouldering away for a long time at a southern Airfield here in UK and this is where it was purchased from.
At the time of the preparation for making the film (1967 ) I was a lowly RAF Cpl @ RAF Valley FCMPC and we had in our main hanger in bits a Spitfire that ultimately became the Spencer Flack mobile. The Station commander at the time was incensed that this private venture got into Valley and ordered it straight out off site. So it went to Spitfire productions and I think was used as a back ground prop in the film. Into 1968 an entry in Valley SRO’s asked for Sgt. Airframe volunteers to be attached to Spitfire productions,to prepare and service all those great planes, I was champing at the bit to go as I knew my promotion to Sgt. was imminent, but that came through in the September and I had missed the boat. ( Pooh !!! ).
I did purchase a copy of the book “The Battle of Britain”, by Leonard Mosley, at that time, which I still have and followed every development of the Film making as it unravelled and yes, it was a bad summer in 68, so the planes went to Spain to complete filming sequences.

You may not realise who Tangmere 1940 is, you may not realise just who Norman Franks is. Suffice it to say that I know who they both are and the worth of their research.
I say again the RAF lost NO Spitfires on that date. As to your suggestion of cover up? I’ll leave you to your delusions.

Hi
kev.
yes I do know tangmare and franks. i got Books by them as to many more authors too.
ok. war is full of delusions.and liars.
no more please.
I still have not solved the Puzzle to wicks spits.maybe I’m deluded.

Andy.
I fully agree that it was a simple case of over claiming. Or exaggeration by the propaganda services or even a simple error in transcription of documents.
But a cover up? What on earth makes Maverik think there was a cover up? The simple fact is that Germany did not win the Battle of Britain. As a fan of that film I’m sure Maverik will recognise the following….
I’m not very interested in propaganda. If we’re right, they’ll give up. If we are wrong, they’ll be in London in a week!.
Now, if I’ve got my history right, I don’t believe the Germans got to London.

Hi.
Kev
yes i watch the film every night and lip synch it word by word.
some info in the film you see a luftwaffe pilot returns as he just shot the spitfire down the scene were Raf pilots sorta floats you know what i mean.
the luftwaffe pilot lands and walks nonchantlly swaggers and tells pilot relax and says my bath. Rubbish, He just shot down a spitfire were was his report why were there not any blackmen IE’ ground crew waving cheering him.
when he lands luftwaffe pilots did loops like the Raf pilots did to indicate a victory.
yet he just swaggers’ as if nothin happened. see its a film .not factullly true.
but a great film never less.
terry
The point is it doesn’t matter whether he claimed three Spitfires, thirty Spitfires or three hundred and three Spitfires. THE RAF LOST NO SPITFIRES ON THAT DATE. Where is the evidence? Show me the wreckage? Did he follow each one down and pinpoint their location?
That then would leave several options none of which you will like.
He claimed Spitfires but shot down Hurricanes.
He believed he had damaged aircraft which survived his attacks.
His record of air victories was filled in incorrectly.
He lied.
You choose.

Hi kev
can you give me details as to a luftwaffe pilots claim form what the pilot would put on it.
as to a Raf pilots …..form.

Hello’
kev
cover up by Raf ‘ as to Losses. do you think the Raf would admit to 5 spitfires well 3 as to 2 Hurricanes But you know what propgandas like spitfire snobbery. to a german ace.when they could hide it.
check franz von werras.claim if wick was a great Liar.they Broadcast this on radio too.a pilot who was it shot down 6 Hurricanes.on german radio. hitler listerning too.
well the Battle was over true. we won? but not by german rules till june 41pilots aces wick molders Galland etc as a morale boost to other german luftwaffe pilots.and germanys people.in comin months.
after All they luftwaffe were Beaten good in summer gone.
Bad morale to the german people ..

It was getting close to sunset at ground level according to this site (dunno if it will go to the same map – just type in the date if it doesn’t) – assuming UK times were given using GMT, of course!
http://www.canterburyweather.co.uk/sun/ukmap.php?d=6&m=11&y=1940
So bright at ground level, better higher up – with a rider that we haven’t checked what the time zone relative to GMT was at the time.
Adrian
cheers it was my mistake.
wrong fight.
terry
Listed as two Hurricanes and one Spitfire here – though the site has several noticeable ‘typos’ ….

Hello’
as to wicks spitfires confirmed” on 6/11/40 hope im right now sorry about 28/11.
well on record Adolf Galland had a french plane unconfirmed may 40.
and wick had was it 1 or 2 swordfish aircraft unconfirmed. plus a shared unit kill on a potez bomber.may 40′ also as I know a blenheim bomber off cherburg early august see Duel of eagles book.wick thinkin a ju 88 by mistake.
then why did wick get these spitfires.on 6/11. then if you say there’s no records on them .
then think of the swordfish planes he claimed .so why didnt the luftwaffe give them to him these swordfish planes.same as these spitfires if he did lied.. or damaged.if no wittness.
think.witness.the luftwaffe were not known for lied false claims not by Rookie pilots less than aces.
terry
and if by the end of battle’ why didnt the luftwaffe give these swordfish planes as a morole boost.well what differnce does it make.if he lied or saw them as a kill.
as a film quote from 1966 film Blue max. the off duty desk man. in the film the Blue max said to Bruno stachel.
no wittness no confirm. stachel says loud’ it was a kill.
terry
It was just another case of over-claiming. It happened in most combats and with all air forces. It was not neccesarily a matter of lies being told.
Certainly, absolutely 100% there were NO Spitfires lost in this combat.
By the way, I will re-check, but I have Weber getting back to Tangmere and not baling out over the IOW.
as another thought Do you think cover up. to the spits.Amy johnson.is one.
as to many more in ww2.
as Im relied Didnt they the propganda machine usually tell on radio today our Top Ace Helmut wick shot down 5 spitfires.well 2 were actually Hurricanes too.called spitfire snobbery.
terry .
