Could it be the difference between using high gloss colours&markings(F-4) and todays low-viz matt grey colours?
you forgot the RAF historical and past aircraft flight, maybe you could slip some new ones in there……jags harriers tornados typhoons dominies jetstreams nimrods vc-10s tristars…
what about resurrecting the ‘ground decoy’ role?:D or future ‘carrier deck training’
I thought that was part of the ‘PLAN’, or is this something new?
Hmm yes, they do seem to have trouble maintaining aircraft…… Ive read that out of 205 hueys they have had delivered, only 30-40 are active!
And Scooter, couldnt agree more, I never really appreciated the F-8 when I was younger(small missle load), but oh baby do they just say sexy! they remind me of the one guy in the pub you wouldnt want to fight without a UZI!
I seem to remember it mentioned that a dozen SHARs where kept in good nick by the navy for ‘flight deck movement training’. will these now be scrapped, or can something similar be done with some of the GR.9s
Hey Scooter
Do you know if the F-35A can be fitted for probe and drogue refuelling like the B/C when built?
Why is it that you will always take these cuts lying down and then say anyone against them has a problem? 10 years is the timeframe for operational JSF and CVF’s- 15 is a worst case due to more cuts, design problems or project setbacks.
I say what i think- that the strong British Armed Forces are being slowly ground away, and whats to say these cuts will be it?
Before the election, your LDP promised to cut tuition fees, but in the national interest. whats to stop them next year or the year after from deciding to cut other capabilities and numbers in the national interest?
Before our election, we were promised no ETS and no changes to the mining tax. Now both are on the table.
Point is, do you REALLY think that politicians will keep all there promises. I hope they do. Probably though they will cut the tornados next year and concentrate on typhoon. I hope they dont, but who REALLY knows?
And the promises today will be kept. Common sense will prevail? funny about that, but those things dont seem to be operational at the moment. Britain without a MPA?
cutting to 6 jet squadrons quickly equals what about only 5, or 4? How long do you REALLY think tornados will last? REALLY! while you and I may still keep our word, and honour a deal, politicians will do whatever is good for them, and promises be damned, deals be damned. I hope this isn’t the case. But what a politician promises before an election and what happens after are two different things.
“Similar thing”? New Zealand decided to permanently get rid of its fast jet capability, & retired all its fighters with no plan nor money for any future regeneration.
We’ve not scrapped our fast jets, we’ve retired one of three types – & the one with by far the smallest numbers. Along with that goes the temporary loss of carrier-borne fast jet capability, but we have billions of quid already committed to regenerating it, the ships to fly the future aircraft already building, & the first test aircraft for regeneration already on order & on the production line.
Not much similarity there.
the’temporary loss of carrier capability’? 10-15 years is not temporary. and the RNZAF and government said they would look into reestablishing the capability in better times…..hasnt happened yet. and they lost the capabilities with a slow series of cuts, just like you. so i hope for your sake the politicians dont decide they want these to be permanent cuts and savings. Contracts and commitments mean nothing in todays world. everything is for sale for the right price.
my view on these fast jet reductions is that you have to look at where the UK wants to be in 10 years time.
In 10 years time we will have F35C operating off of 65000 tonne carriers, we will have the most advanced version of Typhoon and meteor, we will have our own highly advanced UCAVs which may be operating off the carriers and other ships as well as from airbases, we will have our own own ISTAR assets and we will no longer operate Tornado.
Its easy for people outside of the UK (particularly from the US) to look at the RAF losing its legacy fighters and the RN losing its “carriers” as a sign of the UK shirking its duties, but I would suggest that the the UK will be far more potent a threat in 10 years than it is at the moment or it was 2 months ago when we still had harriers (which honestly, really honestly people are making a little too much of i think).
I hope so for you guys. a similar thing happened in New Zealand.they never got the capability back. I hope you politicians dont look and say ‘oh look, they are doing ok with out those things, do they really need the new ones? I hope not
