I have to agree! It would be crazy, non cost effective for Britain (Royal Navy) to go it alone in developing a carrier-based variant of the Typhoon, for what 40-50 airframes?
The already developed and fielded French Rafale would be adequate enough (A better choice than say the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet!!).
Regardless of politics and nationalist pride…………I personally had high hopes for the basic idea and ideology of the JSF program.
But I have always seen the JSF as a stealthy strike platform, with a secondary ability to defend itself (or self escort itself to its strike target)
I think it is absurd to think that the JSF / F-35 could be regarded as a true air superiority fighter that most credit it with – stealth or no stealth.
The JSF / F-35 does not carry enough Aim-120’s and Aim-9X’s to warrant it the ability to take on and sustain itself in air-to-air combat with the likes of the ‘Flanker’ series of ‘true’ air superiority fighters
The United States military history of joint development in aircraft has not been too successful!
I wonder where and how the JSF / F-35 program will fare with the U.S Recession??
I will not be convinced by the JSF / F-35 until it is in wide scale production and in service!
I for one am very very very worried about Australia purchasing the JSF / F-35 and putting its primary front line defence in to one basket – the JSF / F-35 basket!!Regards

Bravo, it one post you have nailed it brilliantly.

Damn straight, Malaysia, Indonsia and Vietnam all have Flankers……

Think F-111….great strike aircraft, never gonna cut it as naval air superiority fighter(and dont get me wrong I LOVE F-111)

My problem exactly….. maybe a joint purchase of F-22 and F-35, but give us F-22 for export now
Seventy two SU-27 could beat six F-22s. The sky is falling, we should get hysterical and cancel the JSF and F-22.
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2008/09/29/316555/war-game-argues-that-usaf-fleet-could-be-outmatched-by.htmlIf the F-22 and F-35 is as ineffective as many of these spammers and political proponents hysterically claim; then why are so many countries trying to copy the technology; by developing aircraft that are similar and using similar technology? If the F-22 is as inferior as some people claim, then why are countries begging to purchase it? If the F-35is as inferior as some people claim, then why are countries lining up and continue to line up to purchase it?
Vast quantities of inferior aircraft could overwhelm superior aircraft. So does that mean we should try to defend ourselves using Fokker Dr.Is?
If technology always advanced in the same direction than we would have stuck with triplanes instead of going to the less maneuverable monoplane.
wow what an inciteful piece of writing….. shows he cant read. so many countries continue to line up for JSF because it is the only option!!!!!!!! AND COUNTRIES ARE BEGGING TO HAVE F-22 BECAUSE IT IS BETTER THAN F-35!!!!! we are talking a micro situation anyway. so 6 F-22 and a tanker might get shot down by a force of 72 flankers. lets say thr raptors get 42, that leaves 3 heavily depleted regiments against a tanker that is running away and decending, we are not including countermeasures, RoCAF, F-22 harrassing stragglers with cannon? over the course of a war that isn’t bad to lose 7 planes, it would just increase US air power.
Its not who wins the battles its who wins the war
the only thing this brilliant idea would bring would be the spooky and spectre gunships as air to air combatants, or adapted B-52’s withe F-22 radar and 50,000 pounds of AMRAAMS:rolleyes:
just look at JSF…
damn straight……. our government is spineless. most people wanted Howard gone……most people now want him back….. at least he could have gotten raptor if he wanted….. and its just not the government who don’t want russian equipment…. i wouldn t either. every purchase validates Putins power
Why not just buy the PAK FA if you can’t get the Raptor?
Seriously? What’s to stop Australia, Japan, and whatnot from switching to Russia for their hardware? I know it would require a bit of cash to establish a support base for a whole new manufacturer, but at least you have something on the level of the Raptor, right?
The Australian public would never accept Russian hardware… thats an even bigger dream plane than JSF
Any Nation or Air Arm will flounder without Stealth not just the USN. Funny, on how Stealth is all great when you talk about the F-22 and somehow not when the F-35 comes up??? Personally, I’ve seen some of the media reports from Australia and no wonder people are so bias against the Lightning. Remember, the story on how poorly the F-35 did against Chinese Flankers in a War Game. The media reported they were beaten like a clubbed baby seal or some bulls#& like that. Only to find out it was totally false!!!! Of course the damage is done.:( Really, I have little respect for 90% of the mass media out there….
Scooter, you miss my point again. it is not the fact that JSF is stealthy that i have a problem with. it is that it is single engined, and that there is no contemporary development of a similar platform…… and that the reason we have been denied raptor is to help add customers and funds to JSF. and i hadn’t heard of the chinese flanker story….. i work afternoon shift and dont pay attention to the TV news…… there is often more truth in an episode of jerry springer!

Its a shame that a whole new generation of……people are listening to russian propaganda. how is russia saving Iran fro US imperialism by supplying them with arms? they have more than enough! If i put every press release from Moscow into a book, changed the names around and i’d have a new da vinci code!
But can we use Israel as a true indicator, considering the US subsidises most of its arms purchases? or has the price been sweetened to lure those last few not sure about commiting?
The question- IS F-35 the best plane for the job, the only plane for the job, or the best plane for the job because it is the only one? Only a yes to the first part is warrant to spend money on JSF
Hmmm…So the guys who designed and built F-22 are suddenly incapable of designing and building F-35? Remember 10-12 years ago when detractors declared F-22 to be a turkey? It turns out F-22 has met or exceeded its performance specs. Where are those detractors now? They are making noises about F-35. Some egos simply cannot admit they are wrong.
unfortunately i cant see how having all eggs in one basket is smart. I think YF-23 should have been developed way further-just to provide redundency. IF F-35 turns out alright, what everyone wants for the RIGHT PRICE(how bout they give us a firm price!!) then great.but JSF seems more of a ‘we love america’ program than anything else. don’t get me wrong either, god bless the ANZUS treaty, but we wanted F-22 here in Australia, not F-35 and despite how valuble our alliance is, is it worth getting screwed over just for F-35?
one of the original theorires behind stealth was that any straight line looked man made and would return a signal, hence tier 1 stealth aircraft have saw tooth weapons bays, maintenance panels. but on tier 2 stealth aircraft it was reailises that to many edges offers a higher percentage of even a weak signal, hence why F-22, B-2 have less of a sawtooth, but still retain no box like doors
know I’m going off topic, but does any one know the percentage of foreign pilots in the saudi air force
I know it wasn’t specifically mentioned, but is it possible it was checked by RNoAF F-16s on the way down and not deemed as important as the other taskings the RAF jets had
