Love the comments about this being a futile war… how many of you have served in it? yeah thought so. the soldiers that are there want to be there…. and its a war that can be won….. but not in a few months like most people want…. wars like the gulf war, won over a few months are NOT the norm. so you actually think it’ll be better if we withdraw and let afghanistan fall, meaning pakistan will too…. and then we have terrorists with nukes….. no….. i can see the logic in that:rolleyes:
RIP brave warrior brothers…. you wont be forgotten
disband the BBMF if history means so little…
Why should the airforce? You could argue that all ex military aircraft need preservation by a military source. Which would cost millions.
BBMF aside, the airforce will never have the money. Especially with the current situation. Id rather my tax went on their main aim which is defence, aid etc.
You say plenty of people to donate, well the vulcan just about gets enough! And thats always pushing it.
the Vulcan, Lightning and Buccaneer were major contibutors during the Cold War…. and the money for the VTTS would still be there… without the wages for the hierachy, and perhaps more people donating in the knowlege it wont be going to waste…
The CSG fights the way it trains. At present, they train with a CVW of approximately 60 airplanes. Even with only 60 airplanes, some CVWs deploy with short manning. Adding another 20-25 airplanes would only exacerbate the manning problem.
As I posted earlier, the ship’s spaces that formerly housed support for the additional 25 airplanes is now occupied by ship’s kit. In other words, there is not enough available space to easily increase the number of airplanes in the CVW.
Yes there is. In a any kind of DEFCON 3 or 2 war, against a near level pear, of course the CVNs will be bulked out.your right, ships kit has expanded, hence why max numbers are down from 90+ to 80… but in a crisis, stateside squadrons and manning will be fixed by mobilisation of reserves, something that is economical or wise unless a major war effort is needed. expect 1 or 2 more VFA/VMFA squadrons and a few extra gowlers and hawkeyes
Helicopter crash in Afghanistan; 31 Americans, 7 Afghans dead

25 US Navy SEALs…. 6 crew believed to be 160th SOAR. largest number of foreign casualties in the War in Afghanistan.
Could the BBMF take on some of the numberplates? Assign one, relavent to each aircraft, with each aircraft ‘team’ representing a squadron…. might keep some of the numbers alive…. could also rotate them every year…..
Purchase them and maintain them with a view to operation when monetary status changes…. i’m sure there would be plenty of people who would volunteer/donate…. eliminating the hierachy of VTTS should pay for a years operation alone!
Any chance the RAF could muddy the lines of the BBMF into a RAFHF and operate said aircraft? and take on the vulcan…..as surely theres more to celebrate about the RAF then the BoB?
The question is does th Royal Navy and Britain need a carrier? do they really believe in being a world power anymore? because if so, said power requires more than a carrier…. it requires the ships, planes and troops to back it up…. and they are being shed at an alarming rate!
The problem with superbases is the very real risk of a quick strike wiping out or denying massive portions of your forces to you… very risky indeed… especially with only one runway.
C-130s, P-3s, C-17s, Il-76.
I understood they were only operated by 8 sqn, and i know at least one was destroyed on an external operaation in mozambique. any more info greatly appreciated!
G’day Paul
I’m very jealous at the moment as unfortunately i’ll be in Qld working that weekend, but if this is to become an annual thing i’ll keep the date free next year. Good luck with everything, i hope for a good turn out…. very sad i wont get to see the awesome jaguar cockpit in person.
Cheers
Braeden
I know it wasnt…. but with a bit of vision surely something better could of been sorted? jobs at AW maintained by licenced building? actual real benefits? just because the original requirements in the 90s said this….. some one should of post september 11 gone this will be the requirement…it wasnt that hard to see post afghan invasion!!! these decisions were made after that…. even after iraq…. i can see an opportunity missed. fact remains wildcat is not worth the price being paid
Obama wasn’t US president back then. He wasn’t even in the US senate until too late to have any influence. Also, what evidence have you seen of big discounts to the UK for OTS US kit? Were our C-17s heavily discounted? Or anything else?
no, the c-17s weren’t discounted….but they didn’t increase in cost over the term of the buy and the uk was given prority picks off the assembly line….
who says the same wouldn’t have happened with blackhawks? and you would of had a better product and more of them for the price
what a waste
