I think the logical conclusion is that the video is not of the shootdown and the actual shootdown was over international waters, using a ship-mounted weapon, likely a missile. And the Syrians lost any credibility from the outset with their lies, so we can assume their ‘evidence’ is also a lie. It would be interesting if the Russians shot it down. Typical cold war situation and it explains the reason Syria desperately wants to point out that gun evidence.

IMO thats simply not a viable reason to endanger the main replacement for the USAFs F-16 and the USNs F/A-18A.

Which is why the bitter feelings concerning the F-35B from many IMHO. The VTOL/VSTOL/STOVL stealth fighter sunk too many resources down the drain at the expense of the two other versions in the program. Not only that, but the B version was the highest priority for a long time.

I wouldn’t have such hard feelings on the F-35B if it had been designed for catapult launches and arrestor recovery as a backup. Think about it, with catapult launch the B version gains a big boost in economy and could haul much larger, externalized loads. You probably are thinking, “What use would a catapult be on an LHD?” Believe it or not, but helicopters can carry much heavier loads with a rolling head start, too.

And then you have the Japanese versus Brazilian wages, too. So it’s more like comparing two C-2 versus five KC-390. If range and payload are the priority then the C-2 wins. If the raw number of sorties is more important the KC-390 wins.
