Won’t it neuter Jericho?
With the shrinking electronics I’m surprised nobody has figured out how to create a pod full of guided rockets. I can’t imagine you would need to carry so many tubes in the pod if your computer is successfully acquiring and prosecuting targets on the first pass. Your rockets could fill niches like laser designated, anti-armor using MMW, anti-personnel airbursting warheads using timed fuses, etc.
I know tonight is a big day for kids, but don’t expect everything appears now is a toy. 😉

It’s difficult to worry about MTOW when it’s such a strain on the structure. Typical loads are much more important.

If I race two cars side by side, each using similar motors but drastically different gearing then the outcome of the race depends on the parameters of the race. The F-35 is like that Mustang sporting a 4.74 rear end gear while the Typhoon is like a Mustang with a 3.45 rear end.
The latter will win longer races, but the former should clean it’s clock in the shorter dashes. The F-35 has a design limit of Mach 1.6 and that comparison was against other fighters that could run up to Mach 1.8 or higher. Of course the F-35 is going to look bad. Of course in this car comparison the fuel tank of both machines is going to be identical, which is not the case in the fighter comparison. So make it a race out to fifty miles or five hundred miles and the comparison looks more favorable. F-35 is a beast out of the blocks and it has long legs. Give it a race that favors it and the competition will cry foul.

Perhaps, but the anime industry could have a heyday with the Rafale’s nice curves and dashing good looks. It’s hard to imagine the F-35A looking sexy.
What streamlined shape?
Do you understand a thin, minimal shape is not better than an arced, curved shape? The body of the F-35 is a better shape than you give it credit; it is an excellent shape for high speed flight. Add in the fact I’m also talking about this particular post that compares the internal carriage of weapons against the competitors that carry external loads.
The F-22 may be a cold war relic, but the JSF is anything but. And the Rafale/Typhoon programs were, not atypical in this modern era, designed for all around use on a protracted development time scale. More like fill the immediate need and fit it to your needs as necessary. This was hardly cold war thinking at all; the bean counters knew that times were changing back before the 1980’s and the fall of the Iron Curtain. The Typhoon is still in the initial stages of replacing the Tornado, another aircraft designed and built in the cold war, that more fits your argument. They are all Cadillac designs as far as I am concerned.

I’d be surprised if you extended the test out another hundred if the competitors had any advantage. You cannot maintain such high speeds without a relatively high fuel burn. Having that streamlined shape and the brute force at military power of an F135 is a big advantage.

It sounds like you’re suggesting a revisit of the Bomarc program, only the payload would be AAM’s and it would be reusable.
A second group of dissimilar fighters, this time in Ukrainian MiG-35’s with thrust vectoring, come for a week. The exchange pilots are led by a retired Colonel that just happens to double as an arms dealer. The students are told that these new threats are very potent because they can turn instantly in any direction and snap off a shot with their eye-controlled target tracking helmets. The MiG-35’s can out maneuver the F-35C’s, but Maverick teaches his students how to evade their vision. The students quickly find out that this is much harder than it sounds. Before the Ukrainian departs he brags about a new version of his Flanker that is much more dangerous than his F-35C’s ever could imagine. He goes on to tell Maverick that this new jet will use a ultra secret mind-controlled targeting helmet to aim a brand new missile that can target anything in the air, including the American stealths.
(You’re probably thinking, why did he edit out Su-30’s and put in MiG-35’s? Having both the American and Ukranian aircraft using the -35 numerology just enhances their mystique. The Russians could use the global exposure of their MiG-35 product. Who knows, this might act as a springboard for their sales. And using MiG-35 makes the Su-37 Terminator look all the more bad ass in comparison.)
Maverick and his pupil – along with about six more in Maverick’s training class – in F-35C’s are escorting the Israeli strike package of Rafales destined to take out the Iranian enrichment plant. The Iranians have cloned the MiG-28 and have a base with a full squadron right in line with the ingress of the strike package. The escorts must neutralize this squadron and prevent any of them from taking off. During the briefing a bit of bad news is dropped on them, the Iranians have figured out how to mask GPS satellite transmissions in such a way that their smart weapons will not work effectively unless they get up close to their targets. Not only that, but somehow the Iranians have figured out how to decode the allied communications and will know everything that gets transmitted so radio silence until the absolute last second is crucial.
Unbeknown to the good guys the Ukrainian has double crossed them by warning the Iranians of the impending mission, and is going to man one of the two prototype Terminator fighters that he is selling to the Iranians. The Iranians are going to buy hundreds of them at one point, but they balk at his price. When the Iranians detect the strike package coming in they scramble their Tomcats and ask the Ukrainian to prove the mettle of the Terminator. If it works as good as he says it does then it shouldn’t be a problem to beat back the invaders. He leads his two prototypes on a collision course with Mavericks flight of F-35C’s.
Good thing the MiG-23’s weren’t using them, too.
