Imagine each fighter with 2-5 detachable stealth cruise missile-shaped drones that fly supercruise and work with data links to the flight leader. IRST, SLAR done with AESA technology, a single low rate of fire but computer aimed cannon, a small chaff and flare dispenser to plug the skies around the group with distractions as needed, and suicide mode against air/surface targets to defend the friendlies if necessary. Computer aimed guns are extremely deadly now; could even be a side firing recoilless gun. Networked sensors will only become the norm. And when the drones are attached perhaps they could be optimized to run their engines off the mothership until released. Save the main engines from abuse and perhaps make afterburner even less necessary for non-supercruise capable carriers.

Has anyone done a quality 3-view of the prototype yet?

The USSR developed big, long-range interceptors (e.g. Tu-28P), because the USSR was such a big country that its airspace couldn’t be effectively defended by shorter range aircraft. Russia is still big enough for that logic to be valid. While the PAK-FA could be useful in an offensive role, that is not necessarily its rationale.

And that is a good point. There is no reason to think it would be used offensively, yet obvious reasons it will be used for defense.

I’ve seen a couple comments about how this PAK-FA resembles YF-23. How so? I’m just not seeing the relationship. It looks more like the F-22 and Flankers morphed together imho.

The best lines I could see from it:

So basically its a delta wing planform, not a conventional layout. Looks like the FB-22 images that floated around years ago.

Thailand’s Chakri Naruebet is about the overall weight size of what I’m talking about, only its limited to 12 aircraft. The wiki says it was built for $175 million in 1994. It has twice the engine necessary and carriers three SAM launchers that wouldn’t be necessary, too. A 600-foot deck with that ramp at the end just looks awful. It was based off Spain’s flagship, Principe de Asturias.

The Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi is another 570-footer in the same size range. It carriers 16-18 aircraft. It has four times the engine necessary and it too is loaded with self defense weapons. Cannot find a price for it.

The WW2-era IJN Ryūjō is about the only non-CVE ship I can find comparable to the dimensions I offered. Its hull was almost 600-foot in length but its bow projected out from under the deck. It operated more than three dozen warbirds.

They would not be cheap. The methods today use more machines that they did fifty years ago. You’d want to use today’s methods to do it or labor will kill your plan.

But flying 100,000 feet requires all sorts of fancy gear. Kind of defeats the ‘affordable’ angle to the program.

Scratch the idea of six CV-22’s. That’s half a billion dollars right there alone. Better off using helicopters to get more bang for the buck. Not sure if C-2A could operate from a 500 foot flight deck; they weight up to 25 tons. Maybe there are better options for ferrying supplies between ship and shore for a 500 foot deck.

But the majority of the aircraft’s flight time – we’re talking over 99% here – is not going to use the M53’s strengths. Modern designs have been optimized for pragmatic usage. If you want point defense then take the F-5E and modernize it to a single F124. Much less program cost. The F124 is probably two years away from an extra couple thousand pounds of wet thrust. So what if it’s not world class performance. It’s more affordable than anything the size of an F4x4 engine. It should make a nice trainer airframe, too.

EF18G CAN carry up to 5 ALQ-99 ECM pods!!!, with 2x2kW antenna each, which in the end comes to 20 kW too, but at what ECM coverage, range, speed, endurance, etc??

You don’t have excess power to match to the 20 kW of energy.

Why go with M53 when the EJ 200 would match the space better? Or they could contract with Saab’s engineers – their experience at turning turbofans in afterburning turbofans – and piggyback off the CFM56 core or something else commercial ots. You want to avoid the french materials as much as possible or you escalate costs over mere whims.

not with those fuel pods you wont and without them its bingo real quick

The EF-111 has a large internal fuel capacity. It wouldn’t drain them that quickly.

Yemen. Oman. Pakistan. Sudan. Phillipines. All recent destinations to Predator drones. All with reluctant agreement from their respective governments. Could have used more firepower but that meant regional shifts. Untenable. This size of carrier offers you that flexibility.
