They really hold power with an iron fist on those ROK airbases. Commanders at every level on them really need heavy doses of CYA.
It’ll take them awhile to get used to the terrain. Its not like they are flying over the Great Plains.
Sounds like a maintenance nightmare. If people think RAM wears out fast on a subsonic bomber like the B-2, then surely its faster inside an air passage that is built around the venturi effect. Just how often do they refresh the RAM materials in something like that?
And for the record, the X-32 was kick ass. Not maybe as aesthetic as the X-35, but some of us find it pretty cool, especially the nose shape. And they reshaped the wing layout with the F-32 mockup, giving it basically the same layout as the F-35. X-32 and the related F-32 proposal both remind me of the F-86 only on steroids.
Unless the GEnx takes off in the free market then there won’t be a supply to change to, and then it won’t be available on a tanker for some time until it has a track record. They generally are behind the curve in programs like this because they are looking for dependable, not bleeding cutting edge.

Has anyone ever compiled a comprehensive comparison across all fighters in regards to cost per flight hour? Would be nice to see how F-22 stacks up against foreign machines, not just the F-15 and F-18.
The $290 million is based on the program cost to modernize their entire battle space strategy. The F-22 is a force multiplier, not just an air superiority aircraft. It will support battle space management techniques that will great streamline the work of the other fighters in the force. The Japanese are getting a bargain and the U.S. is once again shoring up their defenses against future threats. The stability of Japan is good for the entire region, especially for our joint allies in the Pacific. Its win-win for not just both parties, but the entire Pacific theatre.
There are a lot of impressive photos in this thread. But one theme these photos seems to emphasize is the lack of real synergy in all of the designs of the aircraft overall from the PLAAF. The logistical footprint to support such a massive variety of airframes, power plants, electronics, missiles, research programs, etc. And all that for so many mission specific aircraft has to be absolutely mind numbing to say the least. Its not like the PLAAF has the funding of the USAF. I just don’t possibly see the PLAAF maintaining numbers unless their entire force is overhauled within the framework of a much smaller quantity of airframes. With so many aging aircraft, it is more than likely there is going to be massive draw downs of the force in the next two years.
I propose the C-5G, with GEnx engines and the other reliability, maintainability, and NextGen avionics of the C-5M program. If you’re going to re-engine them, why not get modern engines?
They ought to carry it further:
1. Recycle the C-1 designation for a new C-5 version to distinguish it from the C-5 family.
2. Move to a larger wing; boost the area to 900 m^2 or more.
3. Move to larger engines than the C-5, something in the 75-80,000 lbf range.
4. Spec for adequate capacity for 3x M1A2 Abrams and an unrefueled range of 3,000 nm.
5. Spec for adequate volume for 50 pallets.
So how many Americans suffered a similar fate?

Windage is an issue for small caliber bullets, not so much when you reach the 20mm size. In order to reach hypersonic with a conventional round you have to either lighten your bullets and increase the explosive velocity of your charge, or you lengthen the barrel and increase the power in your charge. Or you do both… Either way you wear out your equipment faster. It’s all a trade off quid quo pro to reach the performance parameters. I think time of flight and range with hypervelocity rounds are the future, it’s a matter of logistics to make it happen for large service branches.
30mm is an awfully large general purpose gun. The 30mm is not really a decent match to the general-purpose role because it really doesn’t outrange the 20’s, nor does it allow much in the way for area suppression. You may as well mount a 40mm grenade launcher if you want to spread rounds over an area.
For suppressive fire the 50’s are not superior to the g-p guns on vehicles, which is the best reason to upgun. There has to be something in the under-20mm range developed if you want to be effective against those 14.7’s yet still offer a sizeable volume.
Time of flight is another matter to consider. Hypersonic is the future, and to get there you decrease the bullet’s diameter and increase the caliber navy-style. EMG’s can’t come soon enough.
Never throw money at Boeing to accelerate anything, their corporate vaccuum cleaners have really deep bags to fill before they feel a need to change. Their competitor has a better track record.
Never a good idea to think of fuel as volume, it should be thought of as mass.
Boeing just doesn’t get it, USAF isn’t going for best capability, its going for best value at a capped program cost. It won’t have the money to throw at a lemon program. The 777 would make for a nice asset, especially if it would have had a smaller footprint weight on the tarmac and shorter take off and landing runs. Unfortunately its not going to ever operate from smaller bases and its overkill for this stage of the competition. The kc-30 is just an overall better fit to the big picture in the end.
btw – its a lot cheaper to harden a landing strip than to increase its length. Quite a few bases are too limited in space to add runway length, but at the same time they can be hardened to handle the heavier footprints.
Taiwan may as well buy Flankers. Designs from scratch are a bad idea. That leaves them using Su-30 or MiG-29 variants, which the latter is sorely short of what they’d want.
