You compared completely different design competition winners? And there were other competitors. People quickly forget Tupovlev, Yakovlev, Lavochin, etc.

In hindsight to my previous comments if the response is quick, its decisive. The Soviets had Cuba, Nicaraugua, and Grenada to set up shop. The Soviets would have bombed the Argentinians into submition after setting up traps for both their navy and air force fleets. And after giving Argentina two big black eyes in a very publicized demonstration of force, the Soviets would have landed troops not just on the islands, but on the mainland, too. The Argentinians would have had a rebellion ushering in Communist rule in a matter of days. And they would have held public hangings or firing squafs to obliterate anyone remotely tied to pissing off the Soviet government. People forget how cruel the Soviets played military games.

A combination of FC-1 using RD-93 and MiG-35 probably wouldnt be all bad for the low and medium levels. Much more costly than running Su-30M and J-10A both using Al-31FN. Let them burn up the cash. It is finite.

I won’t pretend the B-70 was affordable, but think for a second what an updated B-70B would have been by 1985. Internal rotary launcher integrated for SRAM, ALCM, and freefall Paveways. Large enough to carry some pretty impressive loads. GBU-15. JDAM. Retaliation on Al Qaeda in 2003 from 80K feet and out of sight. Tip of the Spear attacking airbases over Iraq. Probably so dangerous that there would be no hesitation to drop bombs on Iran’s deep underground facilities.

The downside, the program would have been as costly as the B-2A. Probably similar build count of a couple dozen at most.

Realize the Soviets designed Tu-160 for flight at 80K feet, to fly higher than our interceptors. I don’t think B-70 failed to enter service due to technical hurdles, rather due to budgets. Money was better spent on closing the missile throw-weight gap of the time. B-70 supersonic up high and FB-111A supersonic down low didn’t offer as much MAD as 1,000 modern Minuteman ICBM.

They should fly a hi-lo mix of J-10A with Al-31FN and Su-30M. With their constant tinkering, do you really want them to have Su-35? Plus the Iranian AF doctrine is built around heavy two-seaters.
