Now, I LOVED Ong Bak – it was relatively low-budget, not a hugely thought-provoking script, granted, but it was high on action and had some pretty good laughs in it, too. When I first saw it I was like “Wow! Look at Tony Jaa go! Yeah, kick some ass!!!!” etc etc….

I bought Warrior King yesterday, in need of some ass-kickery after a bad day, and slapped it in for a spin. I knew what to expect – Tony Jaa unleashing his trademark no wires/no CGI ass-whuppin’, with a pretty basic script and some half-decent acting.

So, the story is that Tony Jaa must go to Australia to save his village’s sacred elephant, and fight corrupt cops along the way (with his cohort from Ong Bak, Petchtai Wongkamlao, along for the ride as seemingly the only straight cop in Sydney!)

I was actually quite disappointed, although this was a first viewing so it might be better second time around. The fight scenes are quite repetitive – there’s only so many times you can see an arm or a leg get broken in the same manner, or have someone smash various discarded objects off of someone’s head! :rolleyes:

Having said that, before it gets boring, the fights are actually quite good, and an incredible display of Jaa’s skills, but I’m afraid it’s just simply not as good as its predecessor, by some margin….

(I just hope Jaa doesn’t have any interest in warbirds, in case he comes across this!! :D)

K.C. has given me many happy hours watching him on the screen.The Untouchables(87),Field Of Dreams(89),JFK(91),Waterworld(95) and The Postman(97) will always have a permanant space on my DVD shelf 🙂 and I’ll probably add The Guardian when it’s released 😉

This Wolfgang Petersen remake is great.The special effects are truly impressive and the film’s short running time means there’s no let up in the action.It won’t win any awards for acting or original screenplay but when a film is this enjoyable,who cares.

It’s been a while since I watched a new Asian film so I took pot luck and ordered Dragon Tiger Gate It’s based on a very popular Chinese comic book and is directed by Wilson Yip,who came up with last years highly entertaining and gritty martial arts/police crime actioner Sha Po Lang,re-titled Kill Zone for the western world.

The action cinematography in DTG is supplied by the star of the film,Donnie Yen,who is making a name for himself as the guy to go for if Yuen Woo Ping (All 3 Matrix’s,both Kill Bill’s,Kung Fu Hustle and House Of Fury,to name but a few) is not available.

It’s not one of the best asian beat-em-ups because the story line drags it down a bit,but the action/fight scenes are cracking 😀 .If you can get through the first 60mins then the last hour will leave a smile on your face.
It’s an action movie with some very cool stunt work and a lot of CGI.It’s visually impressive,VERY Manga hairstyles with the 3 main charachters.If you can get the DTS 6.1 version then all the better 😀

Oh yeah,and just for once,everyone carries a mobile phone ( Nokia product placement ) instead of a gun,because they rely on good old-fashioned kung fu and nunchukas 🙂 😎 😎
