For use on Aviation like airshows etc.
than go for the 100/400. going with the 28/300 the 28mm end is a bit long for some static shots and the 300mm end you may find a little short for flying shots.you will find a lot of aviation snappers useing Canon gear go for the 100/400.
I’ll be in the minorty then! 😀
I have the 28-300mm lens as I already use a 400mm prime lens on another body and there was no point having another 400mm that doesn’t quite reproduce the quality of the prime and is so long at the short end.
It is a very, very good lens and I would say slightly better than the 100-400mm in terms of image quality throughout it’s range. It’s a heavy beast like the 100-400 though it slightly more modern being a newer design with a slightly different IS set up etc. If you are looking for a very versatile lens for capturing the odd flying shots as well as taxying and static shots then the 28-300 is brilliant. A lot of photojournalists use it as it goes from standard focal lengths to telephoto without the need the change lens.
If you want predominatly flying shots, then the 100-400mm is probably your better option thanks to a slightly longer reach. From what I’ve seen of that lens it does tend to go a little soft over 350mm. The 100-400 is also a fair bit cheaper than the 28-300mm lens though both will last a very long time.
If you want a little of both, then I would suggest the Sigma 50-500mm HSM DG lens. It doesn’t quite have the same brilliant USM focussing as the Canons, though it’s image quality is very good and it is slightly sharper at 400mm than the Canon. I used the earlier RF APO version of this lens for a number of years and was very pleased with it and still keep it as a back up lens.
They ‘overnighted’ at Shoreham for Airbourne a few weeks ago.
But not for Shoreham Airshow itself. They will join an impressive lime up of civilian Spitfires and Hurricanes.
There may well be three hurricanes on the ground, but the Vacher Hurricane is unlikely to be able to fly after incurring Propellor damage at Shoreham during Eastbourne Airshow. It’s currently hangered with Real Flying Company/FAST Helicopters.
Scenario will have 6 x Spitfire, 2 x Hurricane, 2 x Me108, 1 x Me109
Don’t forget the BBMF fighters will be overnighting at Shoreham on Saturday for the first time.
It’s very hot and miss. Until recently, my office was very close and was under the circuit. There was the occasional Dakota, Jet Provost, Yak and Wilga but there certainly wasn’t regular activity. Aces High have some building there.
The airshow on the 19th August has been cancelled. However, a fly-in and aerojumble has been scheduled for the 22nd September and may include a few small displays.
http://www.redhillairshow.co.uk for more!
Redhill has indeed been cancelled, but there will be a fly-in and aerojumble at Redhill Aerodrome on Saturday 22nd September – there may also be one or two displays aswell. See http://www.redhillairshow.co.uk .
Acebell say they hope to bring back Redhill Airshow proper in 2008 all going well. Remember to support these events if you want them to continue.
On the subject of Duxford rumours the Duxford Update website says TFC’s P51C is soon to depart. May have missed this one but anyone know what the story is here?
It’s been sold to Jim Beasley in the US – http://www.airshows.org.uk/news
If you’re going to pick holes in that scheme, why not have a go at pretty much the entire warbird community about all the different schemes and modifications. Surely someone must remove all those perfectly straight D-Day stripes and replace them with “slap-dash” ones that represent all those that were applied hours before the invasion. Or that a Spitfire XIV wearing the scheme of a much later post war Spitfire F21? What about the colours of Sally-B?
The point of aircraft like the Shuttleworth’s Tiger Moth and the rest of their collection (indeed all historic aircraft that perform at airshows) is represent the various periods of aviation and the people of those periods. Does it matter if the scheme is not 100% accurate? No, because the aircraft is flying and does the talking for itself through it’s shape, sound and in some cases smell too. That’s what people go for when they visit places like Shuttleworth, Duxford and other airshows featuring historic aircraft. At the end of the day the paint serves only to protect that airframe from the elements and highlight the aircraft.

Btw, I’ve been keeping an eye on the Wings & Wheels site and the list of participants is pretty much the same as it was when it was first put up. Are they any additions to it that you are allowed to tell us about Melv or should we just wait and see?
Current display list and timings are the same as on the current website. The only real change has been the loss of the Sea Hawk because currently there’s no way to start the aircraft.
Provisionally, BBMF, Hawk and Tucano won’t be operating from Dunsfold and will be touring acts – A pair of Harriers is due to finish the show with the spare landing prior to the display ship going straight into his show before landing. The Hunter FGA9 looks to be operating from Dunsfold however and should be a grand sight.
Will be there for sure – always willing to support a local show.
It’s shame about the developments, but I’m sure it’ll give the “difficult” residents something else to moan about with continuous construction traffic in the area for the next few years. May make them think they make the wrong decisions to moan about Mowing, Top Gear and “excessive aircraft noise” over the last few years!!!
Sadly, I don’t think there’s the demand for the Aerodrome. There never really attracted that much traffic about during the week. Thankfully we still have the delightful Redhill Aerodrome and Fairoaks in Surrey. Popham’s not too far either.
The Spitfire and Hurricane would have been the BBMF Spitfire IIa and the Vacher Hurricane I en route to Biggin.
