I believe the Dak may have just arrived!
Depends on what you want to see. These early Old Warden shows are slightly unique as there is a temporary runway closer to the crowd line. It makes for great photos at the moment.
However, Abingdon is a annual event rather than a series, however, you are more than likely to their participants over the course of season too. Also, Abingdon is a charitable event for a good cause.
It’s really what you feel like seeing on the day!

Yes, it should be the RNHF Sea Fury. The Sea Hawk may also be present.

IMHO, Abingdon and Woodchurch. I really was surprised by Woodchurch last year.
For those having difficutly getting the full correct text…..
As you are all aware Canadian Warplane Heritage was approached by the R.A.F. to send our Lancaster to England for a Commemorative Fly-past in the summer of 2005. This has been an ongoing project for the last several months.
“I thought it would be best to let you know that, with much regret, we will not be able to raise the amount of sponsorship you require to bring your Lancaster over for the Commemorative Flypast. I am sure that you do not need me to tell you that I have been down nearly every avenue possible to try and make this happen and I personally feel saddened that I have not been able to succeed. However, it is unfair to keep your hopes open any longer as it is clear from this end, that we will not be able to pay the amount you require.
I will, of course, be writing to Mr. Franks personally to thank him for all his assistance and the very positive attitude that he has shown towards the venture. I wish all of you at CWH the very best for 2005 and maybe you will catch some of our Flypast in your press or TV coverage later in the year.”
This would have been a very serious undertaking on behalf of Canadian Warplane Heritage. I would like everyone to be aware that we do not take this type of venture lightly and would never have even considered this unless we felt that the aircraft was capable of flying that distance. All of our flying aircraft are maintained to the highest of standards. We have received both positive and negative comments with regards to this matter and I would like to say that they were all equally appreciated.I would like to thank the people of England and specifically Sqdn. Ldr. Mike Buckland for putting forth so much effort to try and make it happen.
Yours truly,
R.J. Franks
Chairman of the Board
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
Shame. It shows it really was a serious attempt by all concerned and it nearly paid off.
Perhaps they should keep the kitty open for the 65th Anniversary of operation Chastise/90th Anniversary of the RAF in 2008? I’m sure if there was enough coverage in the wider media sponsorship would be much easier to come by for such an historic year!
There will be no Wings and Strings in 2005. There was never an event planned for this year. The next event will be in 2006.
I remember an RAF Tucano had shingle put into it’s fuel tanks over night before one of the Fighter Meets at North Weald – 1993?

Charlielima – I noticed the Spartan at the back at Cubair’s Hanger, I guess the Redwing was there too undergoing servicing of some sort.
Colin – just noticed that bit of creasing myself! I guess it’s nothing major as that photo was taken way before the flying display and the pilots did give Grumpy a thorough check before flying her. Incidentally, for those of you nearby to Redhill, she was still there this morning. She may be departing today! Unfortunatly I had to go to work! 🙁
They’re flying out to Farnborough Airshow throughout the week.
I’m pretty sure they’re not doing that this year as it proved too costly last year.
Don’t forget that with the anniversary and all the events marking it, a lot of organisers will want their Spitfire’s with these markings. In turn this generate money to keep this and other flying, plus money for the restoration of others. The racing colours are of course completely false for this spitfire or RN201 as they are from a Spitfire F23/24.
As far as I’m aware the show site will not be open on Saturday for arrivals/practices. Usually the RAF aircraft arrive on the friday before the show if they are not needed elsewhere, but there should be some of the privately owned aircraft arriving on Saturday. I don’t know about whether the usual spots for watching from outside will be open or not on the saturday, but I guess if they are they will be very busy! Espeacially if the Gannet makes it!
