If the PLAN are going to put her into service they are at last a year or 2 away.

Agreed completely. And even then they would only at that point start a several year process (5-10 years) of really learning how to use her…if they could afford to train constantly and maintain her.

It would be interesting to compare it with the UK’s forthcoming CVF’s.

Two of the big differences will be this.

    1) As I understand it, the UKs CVFs will be conventional carriers with catapaults and arrestor systems. The new Wasp follow-on in the US will be strictly a STOVL carrier as far as fixed wing aircraft are concerned…no assisted launch and no arrestors system.

2)The Wasp follow-on is also an amphibious assault ship with provisions for 2,000 marines and their equipment…the UK carriers, as I understand it, will be strictly aircraft carriers, not meant to perform in the assault role landing marines on distant shores…rathet to support them and to exert sea control.

Truely, a direct purchase of Su-33 from Russia would make the most sense. For all we know maybe it has………….. 😮

It could also make sense to go the other route (ie developing their own), but for different reasons. See my post number 51.

As a matter of fact, they may already be anticipating this so. The Su-27KUB (aka two seater Su-33UB) prototype is fitted with the Zhuk-MSE radar, the radar supposedly intended for the Su-30MK3. In 1997, China had serious talks with Sukhoi about the Su-33. Two years after, the Su-27KUB came out despite there is no concievable market in the RuN for them.

I believe they were anticipating it back then…and that another possibility is that they have since developed the expertise and gotten the technical info to do it themselves. They would be able to do so, if they so chose, without all of the fanfaire or public acclaim associated with a direct purchase.

If they wanted to keep the developemtn of carrier operations and capability away from the ROW for as long as possible…that is what I would do.

Are the Chinese doing this? I honestly don’t know. I believe they are perfectly capable of it. Time will tell.

    Here’s a 3D model I stumbled across as it’s currently envisioned.

Thanks! As soon as they cut first steel, I will have that class up there…essentially a bigger and improved Wasp class. Lots of defensive weaponry (CIWS, RAM, Sea Sparrow) there on the aft end. I will use that pic as one of the initial pics for the class. Great find!

I read many years ago that China had bought the license to manufacture the Su-33? Also, considering that China already builds the Su-27 (i.e.J-11) Flanker. So, personally I would consider it much of a stretch to build Su-33’s…….

    Agreed.

I think its surely in Japan interest to have a American Carrier based in Japan. Also, if Japan had said no. I wonder if the USN would have pulled most of its Naval Forces out too? Remember all the escorts in a Carrier Battle Group…..(i.e. Submarines, Destroyers, Cruisers, AOR’s, etc.)

Exactly. Removing a carrier, besides the more important security issues, also means moving its associated battle group vessels too. A definite econoimic impact.

As far as I know no country has contracted the Enforcer 30000LHD but it may be worth adding it to your excellent website as a point of interest.

Thanks. I am trying to hold the entries to carriers or large deck amphibs that are either in services, or under construction with at least a first steel cut. I’d like to do more…but just do not have the time.

The Kitty Hawk is due to be phsed out when the final Nimitz class carrier comes on line.

You are right. The last Nimitz is CVN-77, the George HW Bush, slated to be active in 2008.

I heard they just started cutting steel for CVN-78.

They did. First steel was cut in August of this year. CVN-78 will be the first CVN-21 class…due out in 2013.

Well, one problem less for the US.
Until now they always had the problem that they needed/whanted to have a carrier forward deployed in Japan, but that it couldn’t be nuclear at the same time.

Problem becouse the Kitty Hawk is coming into its years already & it would have been very unpropable that the US would have developed a Convetnional carrier just to forward deploy it.

With that gone, the Kittty Hawk might even get replaced by the George Bush

I believe the plan all along had been to replace the KH with the GHWB in 2008. The KW was next up on the block…but it looks like now that the JFK will go first. CVN-78 was slated to replace the Enterprise…but maybe the big “E” will get another four or five years until CVN-79 comes along, which is when the JFK was supposed to be decomm’d.

Does anyone have an opinion or information on the Schelde Enforcer 30000 LHD? (other than what is on their site? I understand the design can stretch to a displacement of 40000 for extra capability…

I really like you site. Thanks very much for it 🙂

You are welcome. I hope http://www.worldwideaircraftcarriers.com proves both interesting and useful to you and the others who visit.

Has the Enforcer 30000 LHD been contracted by any nation? It seems similar to the Mistral class in some ways that the French are building.

When Kitty Hawk is retired, load a F-14 Tomcat on deck, and sail her to
Wilmington, North Carolina. We got a nice dock waiting for her, near the
battleship USS North Carolina (BB-55). BB-55 wears 15 Battle Stars, and
would be honored to have Kitty Hawk and F-14 Tomcat join her.
I’ve toured BB-55, and would enjoy touring Kitty Hawk.
    (end of coded message)…

Hehehe…did you see my recent pic of the Constellation over at Bremerton? Here is CV-64 with a Tom on deck just like you were talking about for the Kitty Hawk.

well further reading at CDF suggests that they were always there just been picked out a bit by the new paint job.

It’ll be interesting to see what use and purpose the PLAN finally puts the Varyag to.

BTW, a GREAT job is being done over at Harpoon HQ and on the HP DB.

How about the upcoming LHA/LHX class

Thanks. That is going to be some ship.

I fully intend to have it on the site, butI will wait until at least for the first steel cut, like with the CVN-21. I do not believe the contract for the building of the vessel has been let yet.
