Why do you list only one Mistral class vessel? The second unit (Tonnerre) is nearing completion. These are also LHDs, not LPHs.

Added the Tonnerre and changed the designation this evening.

I liked the site Jeff, very well done. Just something to note on the page for the Invincibles. The Sea Harrier is known as the F/A 2

Fixed that and added the CVN21.

Thanks, I will update the site accordingly. The others I suppose are a matter of interpretation…and in the absence of other reasoning, I’ll use the designation the country supplies…I’m still looking for an “official” ROKN designation on the Dokdo.

The Sea Harrier is known as the F/A 2 not FRS 2 and the last squadron withdrawn from service next year I believe. Also Invincible herself has been paid off into reserve and I don’t think she’s going to commission again.

Thanks for the compliment and I will update the info on the Harriers. We’ll see on the INvincible, as long as the RN has her on its site, I’ll keep her up there. I appreciate the feedback, thanks so much!

Nice website you have there, well done and very informative to those of us who know more about the aircraft than the ships themselves! 😉

Thank you very much. That’s just the type of reaction I was hoping for…and why I did it myself.

I wanted (if for no other reason) a single place I could go and get the info on carrier and carrier-like vessels from all over the world.

how old was this ship?was she the oldest of her class!?

America was commissiond in 1965, 4 years after the Kitty Hawk, which is still in service. America was the last built in the Kitty Hawk class. She served for only 31 years before being decomissioned. 19 years short of her service life of 50 years.

BY comparison, the Kitty Hawk is slated to serve until 2008 when she will be replaced by the USS George HW Bush, CVN-77, after 47 years of service. The USS Enterprise, also commissione din 1961, and the first nuclear powered carrier, is expected to serve until 2013 and be replaced by the first CVN-21 class, CVN-78. The Enterprise will have served 52 years at that point.

The problem with doing it that way is that they are starting from ground zero with absolutely no experience or anything whatsoever. They have a decent relationship with Russia at the moment, so why not a collaborative effort? They could even go so far as to maybe collaborate on the new carrier Russia is considering for the future.

The Russians could, and would help. No doubt whatsoever. The Russians allowed them to license build the J11s (for a price), I imagine they would allow them to “license” build the upgrades from J11 to SU-33 too.

But now, instead of an “in the public” sale…that gets everyone’s attention, Russian technicians and specialists would just be “consulting” for a fee.

The answer? Buy Su-27Ks and pay to have your guys trained with the Russian Navy pilots in the Crimean at Saki.

I would not be surprised to find that the PLAN has already converted/rebuilt some of its own J11s or SU-27s into SU-33-like aircraft and has them training.

May not necessarily be so of course…but I would not be surprised to find out that is what they have done. A lot less fanfare with that than some large international purchase of SU-33s from the Russians.

wow they even left a vehicle and some other crap on top.

I’m sure they were for guaging specific impacts and conditions on the carrier as she was hit and sunk.

but could conceivably be a garbled report on what is now happening to Varyag.

Well, as you say, no way could they build a 78,000 ton carrier from scratch in a year…and no way, after they have one, will they have a fully integrated and operational air wing in another year.

But…the Varyag could be ready for trials in another year to 18 months judging from the current looks of her if the PLAN went all out to make it so. The intergration of an air-wing though, that will be a many year project for the Chinese IMHO.

    America’s last voyage

I read in the Ships Monthly recently that the defunct aircraft carrier USS America was quietly sunk in a firing excercise to make an artificial reef.

It is true…but not for a reef. For pure, important, intelligence information and what it would take to sink a super carrier, and how to better protect them from that and make it even harder. Very useful info. She served faithfully until the end.

    She was towed to sea:

…and sunk by classified “live-fire” means (although rumor has it that the old girl would not go down easily and had to be scuttled by onboard explosives). This pic is just after she took her final plunge.

Excellent image… as you say the island has gone from red primer to grey. She is still riding high in the water though, so they probably haven’t installed any engines.

You are most probably right, but it’s still hard to say, and not out of the question. She also doesn’t have any fuel, stores, or other heavy equipment. I have a feeling we’ll know something more soon.

Why would India need this crap ship ?

The Austin class are very capable LPD/Amphibious assault ships. They would be a fine addition to any navy.

Displaces 16,900 tons. Can land/accomodate (but not hanger) six CH-46 helos. Carryies up to 24 AAV, 4 LCMs, or one LCU, or one LCAC. Will make 21 knots, is 570 ft long and a beam of 105 ft. It was commissioned in 71, so it has a good 10-15 years of life left in her.
