Seem to remember G-ABYA spun in at Biggin Hill during an airshow in the 1970’s. I remember watching the take off then what seemed like a few moments later the commentator said that the aircraft had crashed. The newspapers reported that the pilot and passenger both survived and the most serious injury was a broken arm.
Is this the first rebuild since that accident or did BYA succumb to another later accident?
Glad to see she is back in one piece again.

Sandwiches, coffee…..’hot cans’! I really think you’re letting the side down a bit for Old Warden!

Next year I shall expect you to enter into the spirit of things; white linen tablecloth (ironed), china plates, crystal glasses, silver cutlery…..and food to match!

Ah but to do it properly I would have to get my 1965 Rochdale Olympic restored and unfortunately there isn’t mucjh chance of that happening any time soon

It could be a lot worse. If there were no Old Warden at all that really would be the end of the world as far as I am concerned.
Next years end of season display looks like something to look forward to and with no Vulcan I will probably be able to get a hot lunch meaning Old Warden will be able to relieve me of more money so everyone wins!

WJ, next time would you be able to take your own food? I picked up a ready to go sealed salad and croutons from the supermarket, with a flask of coffee. And some sandwiches for back up! Although I didn’t contribute to OW funds, I’m content, looking at the brisk business, they’ll have done ok.

I could have taken my own food but I have to put up with sandwiches all week and it is too late for hot food when I get back from Old Warden as I have to get up at 5.30AM for work so that I can escape this awful island my other half insists we must live on before the traffic becomes gridlocked.
I am sure OW did OK from the catering on Sunday but with a little more effort and thought they could have done even better than OK and scored major customer service points as well. The OW estate caters for weddings etc so they should have been able to plan to cater properly for the likely demand for food on the day.

Phantom II – I think it is fair to say that what you saw was pretty much a typical Shuttleworth show with the addition of the Vulcan to add icing to the cake.
A great day and I am really pleased that I finally managed to see the Vulcan – just 8 or so years after it returned to the skies! I must admit my preference is mainly for fabric and wood aeroplanes but I did have a bit of a lump in the throat as the Vulcan disappeared.

Sorry I missed the forum meet. My watch is broken and I was beside the Bristol Scout when I found out it was 11.45 which was a bit late for the meet.
The show was great although the music during the Fauvel display wasn’t my cup of tea.
Thanks to Paul Stone for the talk on flying the Comet.
Only gripe was the catering. I grabbed a breakfast early on as I knew it could be a problem. At luchtime I queued for an hour for a sausage bap to be told they had none and those that had been put on the grill a good 20 mins before I got to the front wouldn’t be ready for at least another half hour. I had already had enough bacon for one day so I had to queue again at the burger van for almost another hous so I missed the Hurricans/Seafire and the Dakota displays.
Shuttleworth knew this was a sell out some time ago so they had plenty of time to organise more catering outlets and you wonder at the wisdom of putting something on the menu that takes so long to cook. Maybe burgers would have been better alternative to cumberland sausage as they cook quicker so they would have had a better chance of having them available all the time.
I walked past the people who had been run over while the medics were attending to them. It looked quite nasty and I hope that they are all on the road to recovery.

The Beverley was almost certainly XB261 and the Gunbus which was also on the british register as G-ATVP was a regular at Biggin in those days. With hindsight it was an amazing feat to keep the Gunbus flying in those days with an original engine as I am sure it always flew to and from each show – no mean feat with a rotary back then. It now hangs in the Grahame White building at Hendon.

Around that time N6356T was a regular at Biggin Hill shows. I think it was 1968 when one of the Falcons parachute team landed in front of the Mustang and his parachute fell into the prop. Fortunately the pilot turned the engine off very quickly and the parachutist escaped unhurt.

Thanks to a chance remark in another posting on here I realised the Vulcan was at this show. Not managed to see 558 other than a single flypast at Southend and I am always up for a trip to Old Warden so I grabbed a ticket very quickly. If there is a forum meet just give a time and location and I will do my best to be there but I am going with an old friend who doesn’t have a computer or the internet so he has no interest in a forum meet.

I attended a lecture he gave to the local Raes branch in the 80’s which I really enjoyed and he was quite happy to talk to everyone afterwards. Never forget his displays in the Pitts and Stampe. He will be missed.

Is this the one which was recovered from a tree in a scrapyard several years ago?

G-ACBH/G-ADFO was recovered from Dixons scrapyard at Ramsden Heath in Essex a good few years ago now. It was looked at and rejected as not worth saving by the Southend museum in the early 70’s and I believe it is in a pretty fragile state.

Sabrejet I think Scotavia was actually replying to post no2 which asked if there were actually two DC-4s at North Weald.
The situation is that both DC-4s arrived there over 10 years ago now having been acquired for use in a planned film about the Berlin Airlift. The film never came to fruition and the DC-4s have gradually mouldered away and from memory I believe they have been offered for sale at various times with no takers. There should be another thread on the forum about them which included some photos. At one point there was a plan to keep one of them in live condition but I assume this has fallen through. Restoration to fly would be extremely unlikely after the amount of time both have spent in the open at North Weald. Like most airliners no one in the UK seems to want to take either of them on partly because of their size and the expense of moving them and having spent so long in the open even a static restoration would probably require major work. It is true that the DC-4/C-54 has a military history but doesn’t seem to be regarded as a significant aeroplane on this side of the Atlantic. It is a real shame that one has/is being broken up but having seen them several times since they arrived it has been pretty obvious for ages now that they were living on borrowed time.
Hope this clarifies the situation for you and if I have got any of this completely wrong I apologise and will happily look at any posts which provide more reliable/up to date information.

I found out this morning that the fly in was taking place and had I not already got other commitments I would have driven there but I would have been pretty upset to find out it was pre bought ticket only even if it is only about 20 to 30 mins away from home.
I appreciate that they probably want to limit the crowd size due to comparative lack of space but if it is pre bought ticket only then making this clear in all publicity including listings in avaition magazines could save a lot of ill feeling on the gate.

Thanks for the update. I marvel at the work you have put into K7 and admire the skill and the dedication.
Real shame about the Barracuda – a decision that I am sure they will come to regret in the future.

Had no idea about this either. Never mind “Will it be at Legends” maybe they could be persuaded to bring it across to Old Warden and perhaps Stow Maries once it has been sorted out.
