I’m not sure which is you John, but I’d like to see some more early Harrier shots in Norway!!:)
cheers,
-John
P.S. it was -10 as I walked to work today!
Nice one Kev!!
Not generally known is that around 10% of the population of Australia had joined up and that the ANZAC corps had the highest loss rate of all allied forces during WW1.
Like most towns in britain, Australian & NZ towns all have their memorials, most nameing families that lost more than one member.
My dad had five uncles in France & Belgium (three had fought at Gallipoli), all were wounded (three wounded twice, one gassed). Here’s one of them (top left) with british, canadian, french and aussie friends………….

I often think of those young men and what they put up with.
cheers,
-John

THis thread is much better than the video!!!
LOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNN (look at me, I’m pretty!).
I’m ashamed to say, I watched the whole LAME video because I was waiting to hear that he had false legs or something and was training for the olympics! (What a letdown!)
Just one question………
HOW COME THIS HAS NEVER BEEN ON AMERICA’S DUMBEST HOME VIDEOS?
“Sobbing…Most Unbelievable, Gutsy, Brave, And Heroic Thing I’ve Ever Seen”
(Someone’s been watching too much soap on TV again!)

Wow just found this …… the footage has our Canberra in it WH887, this is this first time i have seen her fly[ little tear in my eye ], does anyone know how to go about trying to get a copy?
All the best Matt;)
Hi,
if you have RealPlayer on your PC, just click on the movie as it runs (or even it it’s not running) and choose to download to RealPlayer. Then you go to RealPlayer and choose to download from RealPlayer to a blank DVD.
Seems simple but might take a bit of practice,
cheers,

Hi,
there was a bit of interest in the rescue of ‘319’ so I thought I’d post some more photos……….. talk about working in adverse conditions!
One of the JATO rockets came off during a take-off attempt from an open camp on New Years Eve 1994 (Deep Freeze 94). No one was injured, and the crew and passengers were back in McMurdo before the night was over. The aircraft was secured and spent 710 days in the open before being repaired and flown out.
Hats off to the USN team that took on and accomplished this job!
cheers,
-John
Still looking for a No. 3 Squadron crest/patch……
The Image at the centre of the badge and the motto is that of a current RAF unit which does have the number 3 in it.
Thanks BIGVERN,
looks like the badge factory put ‘SQUADRON’ instead of ‘FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL’ and sold them off as seconds or something.
I remembered this morning that I had some FTS patches, one turned out to be No.3……… here it is (right) with the ‘mixed up’ one on the left.
cheers,
-John
P.S. Now I’m still looking for a No. 3 SQUADRON crest/patch (I have the wickets patch) Maybe someone knows where to get one?!
I really don’t know what to recommend, but its possible that you may have been scammed, or they just advertised it completely wrong.
Thanks for looking,
the seller was nice enough to refund my money and let me keep the crest/patch (it would cost us more money to return it).
I’ll keep looking, it might be a mistake/test lot from the factory (the seller said more than one has been sold without any problems).
cheers,
-John
Hi,
I will be in the mountains near Valdres (Norway) in a few weeks, the local glideing club use the frozen lake as a runway throughout the winter (quite a sight!).
I’ll take my camera with me!
cheers,
-John
I just checked in case it was an RAAF or RAF regt. badge, but it doesn’t match up, could it be a RCAF badge or something?
Thanks but I don’t think it is canadian because it has ROYAL AIR FORCE on it. Maybe it’s a mistake made at the factory.
It could have been made with just the number ‘3’ wrong, I wonder what other Squadrons have that motto and that phoenix/griffin on their crest?
To me the motto and the torch signify an RAF school of some kind.
The quality of the patch is very good, exactly the same as other originals I have, it came from a seller in London, he sells many RAF and UK military badges, I have contacted him.
cheers,
-John
Hi Phil,
I have this 1960s USN LC-130F pilot’s baseball cap used by a pilot that flew this particular aircraft……………
‘319’ had an accident in the antactic and was left in the snow for almost two years, it was then repaired and flown out. The aircraft continued to serve in the antarctic for another five years.
The Herc now sits at Davis-Monthan in Arizona, ex-VX-6/VXE-6 squadron members are trying to secure it’s release and have it as a monument to the 50 servicemen who died in Antarctica while working with the unit.

Not really a Christmas post but it has to do with snow and ice!
cheers,
-John
Hi,
My best friend back in Oz was a pattern maker, he’s now a woodwork teacher at a grammar school. (I first met Greig in kindergarten in 1961, we are both 52 now!).
I remember some of the things he and his company made from wood back then… fantastic skills involved!
Here’s a little bit I found………..
