“playing sessions on Top Gear “?
No. It was actually playing sessions IN top gear.
The drugs were stronger back then. Apparently.
Having said all that, I’m glad I wasn’t hallucinating;
It’s not a racial thing in the accepted sense, it is protect our own first policy which I thought most people want.
Which I do agree with! Farage is in an unenviable position because anything he says which even hits at immigration will be parsed by journalists until it appears to have a racist undertone. Of course, this isn’t helped by the fruitcakes that make up the rest of UKIP!

Before it became a comedy show you mean ?
Does anyone really care how quickly a celebrity can do a lap ?
I seem to remember the old show assessed cars far more objectively, based on specs and performance as tested in the field in realistic conditions. Quentin Willson could be acerbic, but usually explained his reasoning albeit in a slightly slimy manner. Tiff Needell was, lest we forget, a real racing driver and not just a journalist that could make a bit of tyre smoke. That element of Top Gear became Fifth Gear on Channel 5, which I’ve not bothered to watch for a while. :highly_amused:
I dare say that the financial down turn forced the producers of Top Gear to move the scope of the show from aspirational lifestyle porn to unreconstructed lad culture. The chameleon-like Clarkson could do either, though his ADHD tendencies clearly favour the latter. On paper the concept of reporting on cars none of your viewers can afford looks a bit weak!
Didn’t Top Gear used to be a radio show in the ’60s? I have collected some bootleg recordings of bands playing sessions on ‘Top Gear’.i

The thought of losing the original paint work, no matter how scruffy it is, makes me wince slightly. I would put a prop on it and call it a day.
With regards to getting it flying, dig up a thread on here about the A26 crash at Biggin if you wish to see endless handwringing and apologia from the ‘if only he had another couple of hundred feet’ crowd. A good number of historic aircraft have been lost in the last few decades due to pilot error or mechanical failure. I would love to see more historic aircraft take to the air, but only if there are a good number of examples left on the ground. Of the thousands that go to air shows in the UK every year, I wager a healthy percentage of them (lets say 75%) would be happy to see a Buchon in the air and wouldn’t feel cheated because it wasn’t a ‘real’ Messerschmitt. For these reasons I consider it too risky to turn this 109 into a flyer. One only has to remember that Walter Soplata did not want any of his private collection returned to flying condition and people did anyway, and crashed one of the restored aircraft as a result. Cue endless handwringing and apologia from the ‘he was a good pilot’ crowd. The crash of that aircraft, a rare F2G Corsair, is covered here.

Sadly (VERY sadly) not all these things are stolen for scrap…. Many a valuable artefact has been stolen to adorn the wall of a wealthy collector.
An interesting point. Inappropriate as discussing it in this thread may seem, I have observed that a fair number of the online community here and elsewhere seem to have far less of a problem with parts taken from high ground wrecks or other crash sites. I would love to think that specific parts are grubbed from historic wreck sites in the middle of the night by enterprising pikeys, but it seems unlikely. I know that one of my friends has a small piece off of the Catalina wreck on Barra. Harmless I know, but if everybody takes a small piece of that Catalina then there will be little of it left in the next few years. I’m speaking the obvious here I know. In other news we have seen crash sites excavated where many personal items were recovered, down to pieces of parachute material and pieces of uniform fabric in some cases, but no human remains. I find that surprising. I would love to think that people aren’t actively ignoring obvious bone fragments and the like so that they can keep removing bent metal from the ground with impunity. I know a few people in commercial archaeology, and nothing is surprising; they don’t enjoy filling out paper work any more than anybody else.
From what I’ve read here and elsewhere, it would appear that aircraft “preservation” societies spent a lot of weekends poaching parts from wreck sites in the ’70s to ’90s. There also appears to be a steady stream of parts turning up on Ebay which were clearly liberated from crash sites. Digging up a Spitfire wreck, or helping with the sale of parts knowingly gained in this manner, and flogging the parts on Ebay is different from unscrewing a war memorial for the scrap value how?
I’m not trying to take anything away from the crime in question in this thread. Stealing war memorials is about as low as it gets, especially if it is just for the value of the scrap. I personally think the thieves should be punished more severely because they targetted a war memorial (why not just steal drain covers?). ‘Clean’ scrappies have to maintain paper trails for all of the materials they handle, so any that touch war memorials and therefore aid and abet this sort of thievery also need a good kicking. In my opinion.
But dull as dishwater !
I seem to remember it was all about cars and stuff.

Is it with licence payers money ?
Top Gear sell a lot of merchandise (a polite word for ‘tat’), which must help!

I heard a caller on LBC suggest that Top Gear needs a female presenter. Everybody seems to forget the previous iteration of TG with Vicki Butler-Henderson, Quentin Willson and Tiff Needell!

We can have a different discussion about racial tensions and their roots, but that has been rehearsed here many times.
Brilliant trolling. Lob some bombs, talk about ‘blacks’ (are you my Gran?), then tut about people dragging a topic off course when you run out of steam but still wish to maintain an unwarranted sense of superiority. What a Charlie Hunt!

People weren’t offended because they weren’t aware they should be.
You asked them, I suppose. I think those that were, or would have been, offended had absolutely no voice back then.
