I use Imgur to host images. I upload them and set them to ‘private’, but I can still link to them here and elsewhere. On this forum, the trick is to untick ‘Retrieve remote file and reference locally’, as presumably this uses up storage space dished out to each user.

Images or not, corrosion and general deterioration is an issue for most if not all outdoor Vulcans. Beyond getting cooked in the sun, I imagine XM606 at Barksdale, Louisiana, has a slightly easier time of it than the various B2s languishing outside elsehwhere. Goose Bay’s weather is probably horrible for airframes, even when compared to ours here in the UK, hence the apparent deterioration reported here.

Having said that, I saw photos of East Fortune’s example recently (possibly on here, but maybe on Facebook) and it is starting to look a little rough. Sadly, and with all the will in the world, I do think that Vulcans are simply ‘too much aircraft’ for smaller museums to deal with as outdoor attractions. Even East Fortune, which is one of our national museums up here, doesn’t seem that interested in the appearance of their outdoor airframes. NEAM, Midland Air Museum, et al might have some uncomfortable decisions on the horizon. B.2s survive in abundance when compared to the rest of the V Bomber fleet so can we, and do we need to, save them all?

A quick Google of XL361 drags up historic photos of it looking quite smart. Unfortunately I found Google Streetview ‘Photo Sphere’ imagery from last year that shows it is in rough cosmetic condition:

To quote the first comment on the blog:

I doubt it would be for sale as scrap metal. I reckon this was targetted as it would fetch a high price in memorabilia collectors’ circles.

I think this is an interesting point of view! If true then it probably wasn’t gypsies/The Polish/cultural Marxists etc who stole this plaque, but one of us! The horror! The historic aviation community does seem to foster a hoarder mentality, combined with a mindset that sees nothing morally dubious about excavating and selling crash-site relics. If the above is true then it wouldn’t be the first stolen-to-order case in the aviation community; probably not even the first this year.

I think I know what you’re trying to say but, from the point of view of the missing plaque…

…is it better if they knew they were doing wrong, had respect, and then took the plaque anyway?

I wouldn’t expect anything like this level of self reflection from any of this forum’s resident pub bores. :highly_amused:

    “She Will Fly Again”…

Well I wouldn’t bet on it. Maybe they should give Red Bull a ring?

I’m always entertained by forum members who seem to only post when the word ‘hangar’ is misspelled. It is like they receive a special signal or something.

I would be very surprised if Sea Hawk WV908 ever flies again.

I can’t really get behind conceptual art that requires an opening gambit “The idea is…” from the artist. Good art shouldn’t need a clear explanation, and surely some of the interpretation is up to the viewer?

Couldn’t this guy just claim to bury a MiG-21 and leave it at that? A cursory Google reveals that the artist previously dumped some jet engines in the grounds of the Gallery of Modern Art here in Edinburgh. I recall that ‘artwork’!!

Ironic that a group who “don’t have any time for the key board (sic) warriors” have a blogger who goes to some length to keep making this exact point with every new post.

John, some of the script I copied over is missing, presumably because the forum parsed it as genuine html. The section of the script is a single line that reads ‘head’, twice, in angle brackets.

The section on painting was fascinating. Presumably the workflow is dictated in part by the type of paint. Getting a nice flat, gloss finish in paintwork applied with a roller, and polished with 1000 grit ‘disks’ seems entirely counter-intuitive. However the results speak for themselves!

Hats off, also, to the Diary writer for keeping it down to a single paragraph of bloviation before talking about the boaty stuff.

Re #430: John, you can remove the blue backdrop depending on what browser you are using. I was able to do it in Google Chrome by right clicking, selecting ‘Inspect”, selecting the row ‘… == $0’ and then hitting the delete key.

Re #433: CADman, I’ve wondered the same. It has some Folland Gnat parts in it but, if all goes to plan, hopefully no flying will take place this time. I suppose it breaks up the threads about car boot sale finds and rusty scrap! :applause:

Doesn’t look like anything rare is being scrapped?

In response to the question posed, this action can be prevented if you dig deep!
