Your ‘purple prose’ means that you are related to the late, lamented Barbara Cartland.

I always wondered what you read in the bath.

I’ve always had John down as the Luger under the mattress sort.

Why is anybody surprised that an old, fat, pub-dwelling cockney whose sole purpose in life is to throw pointy things at a round thing has archaic, non-progressive views? Why should anybody care? I’m sure I would find similar views held dearly if I kicked down the door of a croft on Lewis and interrogated the inhabitants. Why waste energy on trying to change the opinions of this steadfast corner of the population?

Is this not the museum that limits to a great extent what its visitors can and cannot do whilst visiting?

They don’t allow mobile phones or cameras, even fully switched off and bundled away, anywhere within the museum ‘due to theft’. Having had a look on Flickr, some people have flaunted these rules somehow… I wonder where they hid their cameras?

From what I can gather from two minutes of Googling, North Hawkinge is considered one of the more deprived areas of Kent. I’m not sure that any potential development should be halted simply so that more people can park their cars and scrutinise some Spitfires.

That is what forums are for Meddle – everybody has an opinion – many of which might differ from yours ; )

There is a difference between simply holding an opinion and the rampant paranoia going on here. All we’ve learned is that Hendon are moving some exhibits around and the manager (or whoever) doesn’t know the entire inventory of their stores. This thread would give the impression that these airframes were off to the smelters!

Opinion time! Hendon is behind the times, as a museum. They’ve made an impressively boring, dry museum out of fascinating exhibits. The lighting is crap and the exhibits are crammed in gracelessly. On paper at least, a museum with a Liberator, Lancaster and Vulcan within a few feet of each other should be astonishing, but the gravitas of these airframes is lost of the murk and the clutter. If you want to know anything about what you are looking at you have to squint at screeds of text in either gloomy darkness or the unrelenting glare of a spotlight. I think this forum tends to favour museums that follow the ‘shed full of stuff’ model, such as Hawkinge and the like, but I don’t believe the general public do! If money is an issue then Hendon should consider charging an entry fee.

I’m greatly amused at the sheer level of bellyaching coming from some forumites, generated purely by some images of a museum moving its exhibits.

Whilst I can appreciate the significance of these medals the real treasure of Winkle’s at this auction are his log books. Now they should be kept together and kept in a museum (FAST or Yeovilton)

East Fortune surely, given that Brown was born in Leith?

It does look slightly comical from certain angles, but hats off to the guy that built it and for getting it this far. Judging by his/their Facebook presence they have a good sense of humour as well.

Public donations? Maybe 2044 is a better bet

If they can do it then that beats the Vulcan in my book.

As a feat of engineering, yes! As an airshow crowd pleaser, probably no. To a good chunk of your audience it will just be another “Spitfire”, like any other fighter of the era.

Surely the story of these machines is in the telling? You could spin the Kee Bird story as a tragic case of hubris. Conversely at least one of the lesser static examples I cited previously was saved from the Aberdeen proving grounds, and therefore have a survivor spin as well. The issue is that nobody cares about those, whereas there is a ‘just out of reach’ element to Kee Bird and the Lady of the Lake machines in the same way that Maid of the Harlech warrants repeated clamouring. There was a P38 wreck you could literally walk into the middle of but do nothing about! Far more alluring than a badly restored ‘bird on a stick’ somewhere.

The chap I spoke with was mainly talking about the food and rum rations on HMS Albion and, latterly, the US carrier that he swapped onto (which was a dry ship but had much better food). He didn’t seem that interested in aircraft, so he may well have been wrong. He told me about the various bars in Edinburgh that serve the ‘right’ rum, as well as the prices, so I think his priorities lay elsewhere!

I spoke to a man earlier this year who had served on HMS Albion. He had marshalled aircraft on the deck, namely DH Sea Hawks and Venoms. He said that the tiger on the EF Sea Hawk should be black and white, not black and orange. He has informed them of this error!

$22,000 seems cheap, though, even for a 3/4 scale replica.

The props turn the wrong way, the wings are four feet too long, the exhausts are made from recycled hard hats and there isn’t a bomb bay…

    Wrong thread. :very_drunk:
