I wonder if C1 refers to it being the fixed undercarriage series 1 aircraft and C2 the retract equipped series 2. The RAF operated one C3 and three C4 Herons.

    Hi Radpoe,

Had to look back a bit to find my original post. I see I only posted an airborne shot of it. Here are a couple of ground shots.

It is 60″ span which makes it 1:8.6. I built it from my own plans (although the nose I got quite wrong because I don’t normally take the drawings down to the workshop but trace bits for use there) but the plans were published a couple of years ago (as most of my designs are) in RC Model World, so you could get them from Traplet if you wanted.
Alternatively the model has been languishing in a corner of the workshop gathering dust and spiders if you wanted one ready made exactly like it! It wants a bit of attention and a new ESC but it still has the old Nicad power packs in it, though what state they are in I dread to think – haven’t checked them for a couple of years – probably dead. Let me know if you’re interested.

    Steve,
Those are some seriously scale models! My hat is off to you – mine can only be called ‘sport-scale’ really. The outlines, shapes and so on are as close as I can get them but none come close to things like your Spit’s interior.
    Well done indeed!

On a north-south course? Hardly a direct course for Straubing I would think!
How many Broncos are there in UK?

(I leave it to my British friends to point out the problem behind David’s point that the Vimy – a British design triumph – can fly in the US (and I suspect Australia and elsewhere) but not the UK.)

It’s the ‘nanny state’ that you’ve heard about in just about any area you care to look at in our drab little lives over here in UK. We are simply too regulated.
I had always thought that we had caught our sue-happy culture from the USA, but perhaps they have learned how to cope with it better over there. Or maybe our committees reckon they can do it better by being even more finnicky than the USA?
We’ve all got so negative. We ask not ‘Can we do it?’ but ‘What if it all goes wrong?’
There was a time when Great Britain spawned great adventurers – now we have stupidity venerated (even assumed) – could we have imagined a label that warned ‘may be hot when heated’ ten or twenty years ago? We daren’t do anything without covering our tracks legally – it’s very sad.

Sorry folks, I’m getting very cynical in my old age… please somebody present me with something – any fact at all – that will counteract this!

Thanks for posting the photos though – excellent work!

I never dreamed when she flew over my house a couple of weeks ago that it would never happen again.

Sorry Sky high, the big ‘C’ stands for Capacity and when we talk about the ability of a set of Lithium Polymer batteries to deliver power we use the C rating and add a multiplier.
So if you are (for example) looking at getting a set of cells for a motor that is capable of up to 400 watts that wattage could be supplied by 12.6 volts at 30 amps. (leaving a little safety margin).
(Lithium Polymer cells are supplied at a median voltage of 3.6 or 3.7 volts, but you need to think fully charged voltage for the launch which is 4.2 volts per cell.)
But since we’re looking at Capacity and considering the cells’ ability to supply sufficient current and voltage the 30A could (just) be supplied by a set of 3 cells (referred to as 3s – for 3 in series) of 3000 mah (3ah) capacity that were only capable of delivering 10 times their capacity (10C = 30A).
Alternatively it would be possible to get the required current from a 3s set of 20C cells of only 1500mah.
    Or 40C cells of 750mah.
All these would be just capable of doing the job but obviously the last two would not be able to do so for as long a flight as the first set, which has the greatest capacity.
Ducted fan models are not very efficient – so much so that they typically fly for only about half the time of a prop driven aircraft on the same battery pack. They are current-hungry and can drag the voltage down to a level where flight is either sluggish of impossible. It pays therefore to ensure that the current delivery of your power pack is sufficient to deliver the required current without dropping the voltage significantly.

I still use the old technology 10C cells for several of my models – including the Q6 in my avatar, but am steadily converting to Loong Max cells which are capable of delivering 20C – 35C.
There are however some even newer cells that are capable of 40C and of being charged (and look at the caveats before embarking on that course) at 5C, which in the case of our 3000 mah cells would be 3 x 5 = 15A.
Personally I don’t plan to go that route until the Pathfinders have been there!

I hope I have explained that adequately – and I apologise if I have insulted your intelligence!
So yes, whatever model you choose – and I would suggest a prop driven job for a start – you will need to choose a set of cells to power it. The manufacturer will always make his reccommendation, but just don’t skimp on it – it ain’t worth the hassle.
Since cost is an issue have a look at http://www.giantcod.co.uk – it’s the cheapest site I’ve found so far for cells and other bits and pieces.

    Sky high,
I have not flown any foamies at all, but quite a number of club members at Bassingbourn have and from what I see they are a good way to get back into flying models. Yes, they seem quite expensive to me too, but I know I’m an old skinflint – and I do so enjoy building. Working with wood I find most enjoyable.
Crash resistance seems to be quite good because they are light. Often even a quite bad breakage (and on tarmac that can be bad – scuffing too) can be repaired with the right glue.
If you fly over grass they should last a good long time.
Another plus is that they are Almost Ready To Fly – so don’t take the entire winter to put together. A few I believe now come with 2.4ghz radio too.
Particularly if you are looking at the jet (ducted fan) range one of two of the chaps have tried to get away with low C LiPos. They found the power lacking and had to change the cells for 30C types so the voltage stayed high enough to get the revs.

    Dakota,
    Thankyou kind sir.
The touch and go was the best touch down of all day but the other two evidenced the fact that it is such a docile model to fly that brain fade set in! Too busy enjoying the sight in the air… oh whoops! I’m supposed to be flying her…

Here’s the latest model first flown on 19th Sept. The vid below was taken at Baldock the following day.

Anybody want to say what they’re building over the winter?
I’m drawing up a Dragonfly at the moment and looking for instrument panel pics as usual.

    Thanks Keith.
My camera wouldn’t get half as good shots as those – not with me on the button anyway!
I really ought to take my camera around with me but it’s just a hassle too far really. If I’m flying I like to keep it simple and relax as much as possible.
I was up at the scale comps at Warboys a week back and Mike Trew was there with his Vega Gull which is a really beautiful model. I think static judges would break down with laughter if I set the Q6 up before them!

Hey – I was puzzled by the photo of ‘BaldEagleIII’ – what happened to his kill emblems? Did he shoot down three skylights?
I can just hear him swearing as his transfers came back from the printers and he realised he had forgotten to delete the sections that made them swastikas!

Did you get to Shuttleworth Ian?
I was there on the Saturday with the Q6 and Messenger. (My Gemini died the following day at Bickley – but will be restored eventually by another)

Keith, any more photos you want to post would be fine by me! I gather the weather was pretty blustery causing flying to be terminated in the afternoon.

    Hi Daz,
Sorry to be a bit late celebrating your maiden flight success – spending most of my available forum time on RC Groups these days. (And my Pe-2 build is taking FOREVER!)

Got company on the Parkzone foamies in the form of Black Knight (Sir Crashalot?) I see. They are remarkably resilient. Excellent fliers too.

Was the battery problem sorted okay? Check out RC Groups if you need any helpful advice.

    Happy landings to all!

With your TSR-2 as with all other scale models it’s that it looks like the real thing as it flies by that counts in my book.
    All silver finish?

I thought your Connie looked fine too – just not such an impressive size by the look of it. Don’t need to do yourself down.

The world awaits with bated breath!

I imagine you were at work yesterday? It was a beautiful day down here.
I remember when I was at work the weekdays always seemed good for flying and the weekends seriously deteriorated. Had to resort to getting out lunch times.
    The moment will come.
