As per “Aces High”, it is the same man.

The a/c was LM 720 in my opinion.

Air Britain series “LA100 to LZ999” gives LM720 as a Lancaster III, that served with 61. Collided with a radar mast on return from Merseburg, 15/1/45

LM920 doesn’t exist. The number falls within a batch of Warwicks that were cancelled.

Mason’s “Lancaster” also has 720 with 61. As well as the Merseburg raid, it has other significent ops as Calais, 29/9/44, Brunswick, 14/15/10/44, Trondheim 22/23/11/44.

    Hope that helps

    PM me please…

    Hello there,

I live in Werrington, and have done a small amount of research on this crash. I have managed to find a witness, but I’m not convinced he is talking about the same crash. I have got the acident report from the US archives, happy to share whatever I have.

    Cheers

    Wrong again

When I heard you talking at Old Warden in October, you were talking about the Ryan being the interim step before a fighter.

And then you were talking about a possible purchase, but you couldn’t give details.

I thought it was going to be a Mustang!

    But what puzzles me is…

Where does the worry lie over this? Is it that they won’t make the story as per the real events, or as portrayed in the first film?

    My opinion,

Bader was one of those flawed people, in fact much like 99% of us. His way of dealing with disability by refusing to be intimidated by it, was and is, an inspiration. The possible flip-side of that is that he may well have been unpleasant to quite a few people.

In “Fly For Your Life” there is a reported exchange between “Sailor” Malan and Stanford Tuck after Tuck had a confrontation with Bader.

“Tuck sighed and shook his head, ‘Christ he makes me so mad. Why does he have to be so obstinate all the time?”
“Because”, Sailor said as he moved off, “if he wasn’t so bl**dy obstinate, he bl**dy well wouldn’t be here!”

I don’t know how reliable the above is, presumably it is from Tuck’s memory, but I think it makes the point.

Personally, I prefer my heroes to be flawed, they seem more likeable…

I too am looking forward to the programme, the article in ATB seemed very conclusive to me, and a chap who’s opinion I respect has told me that Andy knows his stuff.

I think I can make the serial out as PA 414.

Air-Britain Serials says it was a Lancaster I that was delivered between June 44 and September 45. It served with 35 and then 7 Squadron and was struck off charge on 20th October 48.

It probably was on the way to be scrapped…

    Hi,

I used to live in Wickford. I was also thrown by the Frunds Farm address when I was trying to research this. As you have found it, Frunds Farm doesn’t seem to exist…

In about 94 or 95 I met a bloke who was doing some kind of exhibition at Wickford library. He was from a local aviation archealogy group. I asked him about it and he knew where the crash site was. He drew me a map. He said that the site wasn’t very promising. Of course, unfortunately, I no longer have the name or details.

The man was a Wickford resident, and he was also involved in organising a tribute when a road in Wickford, Terrance Webster, was named after a downed BoB pilot from 41 Sqdn. Apparently the Grace Spitfire did a flypast, a long shot but maybe they still have contact details?

I would say that this chap would probably be early fifties now, so hopefully he is still around. The local paper is the Evening Echo, they may be able to run a request for help?

    Hope this helps.
