It was interesting that the Swordfish Pilot was very complementary about the aircraft. They could have pointed out that despite it outdated look, it actually outlasted it sucessor.
I believe that there is some scope for additional features on the Darings after they’ve been completed. Of course they could have had all those things, but they were always going to be primarily an AAW platform. Plus I’d like to know who would have built the T-45s to your specifications for a lower price. Horizon has the same number of Asters too.
HMS Daring is not due to be comissioned until 2009, there is still plenty of time for “the powers that be” to change their mind and waste more money on changed to the armament.
HMS Victory is still commissioned in the Royal Navy and therefore not “preserved” in the same meaning as a privately owned warbird.
Did the Bleriot replica ever fly or was it just for display purposes only?
[QUOTE=Mike J]I believe that many of the collection’s recent acquisitions such as the Lysander, Provost and Jungmann have been funded entirely by SVAS, as have the annual spares purchases for the operational aircraft.QUOTE]
You are quite correct Mike, the SVAS did indeed purchase the Lysander, Provost, Jungmann and the Chipmunk for the Collection and also pay for spares.
I would also like to thank the Ground Crew an Pilots who were not able to hide in the dry during the downpour. Despite the weather there was some spirited flying that more than made up for the rain.
It was good to see the Avro Triplane up during the interval.
Am I right in thinking that there were only 9 conversions to 2 seat. Are there any of the other still in existance but not flying?
Does anyone have any idea who the UK “Collector” might be. Reading this thread so far, I get the impresssion that it is an organisation rather than an individual.
I remember seeing 2 of the BAS Twin Otters at Old Warden a couple of years ago before the runway was extended. I remember that they barely used half of the runway on take off.
Nice to see the Hawker Nimrod in the sky again.
Hopefully once the Demon has an engine, someone will try to get the Demon, Nimrod and Hind together for a display. 3 silver Hawker biplanes with Rolls Royce Kestrals. What a sight!!!!!
We may need a bigger ladder, a Vimy might even present a challenge to Andrew-O.
Rob
If you need someone to hold your ladder…..
How about stopping at Old Warden on your way south. There must be somewhere to camp nearby.
Does anybody know what the future holds for it as and when it reaches its destination, I remember reading that it might be up for sale (from @eroplane monthly I think  )
Might it be something that the Shuttleworth Collection would be interested in acquiring?
I’ve just had a look at Kermit Week’s Flights of Fantasy site, and there is no mention of a Lysander? does he still have it?
I think the DH88 Comet Racer has to be up there with the most beautiful. Just grabbed this of an earlier thread as it shows a sight we will hopefully see in the future.
