It downloaded okay for me and in the pdf format it displays fine. The first few pages look good and I am tempted to read more but I’m supposed to be doing some work!

I like the image of the woman standing and waving/posing for the gallery. Wonder if it was someone famous, as there did seem an awful lot of people watching the take off?

We have never found out who she was but have always wondered.

My Uncle was on the flight going back to Canada – that is why we were there and my father filmed it – I was only a few years old and found it all very exciting.

Drossel-Interesting pic, still shod with oversize 700’s in those days.

A shame my dad was using b&w film at the time – does anyone know what the colour scheme was at this time (maybe the same as G-AHSO)? I have seen a photo on the ‘net of it in silver and red but don’t know when that was taken.

Mudmover – how much of G-APKN is left?

My one and only flight in an Auster was at Ingoldmells in 1969. My dad sat beside the pilot of G-APKN and I sat in the little seat in the back.

Same here – in the early 70’s. It was my first flight so I have a very good memory of it.
My dad took a photo at the time – sad to hear it has been destroyed.

    Thanks for your comments.

I only see four spitfires there dont the BBMF own Five?

    James

Yes but two did not fly – one in the photo is the Rolls Royce (ex BBMF) one that joined them for the day.

I use mine on shutter priority most of the time – 1/320 or below for prop blur – higher for jets. Focus AF-C for action shots (AF-S for static or you can just leave it on AF-A and it will pick the mode required). AF-Area mode on either closest subject if appropriate or single (low light with long lenses it seems to do less hunting if I leave it on the centre area).

I usually shoot in raw these days (I use the raw plug-in for photoshop as Nikon and Adobe seem to be working together at last – but before that I used the free Rawshooter essentials – they have just been taken over by Adobe but you can still download it here ) but if not I use the best quality jpeg (Fine L).

As for lenses most of the Nikon autofocus will work – to check I would go to :- http://www.nikonians.org there is an excellent section for D50 owners.

I hope you find this of some use – you may find you prefer other settings but these just give me the results I like – the program modes can also give good results and are good to use initially as you get a feel for the camera as is the jpeg mode but raw does give slightly better quality and flexibility. If you do end up using raw and use WindowsXP it is worth downloading the Microsoft Raw Image Viewer from their site as it now supports the D50.

There is more to it than pure pixel count and even if the image quality was as good – a dslr is also part of a system so you can upgrade in the future (the lens for example if the soon to be released Nikon 70-300 VR turns out to be good). I like Fuji and have one of their earlier “bridge” cameras but between the two I would have no hesitation in saying the Nikon is the one to go for.

200mm on the F55 it’s the same as 300mm for the D50,how come?,And what will be the max.value in “mm” on the D50 for the same 300mm lens?.

It is down to the sensor being smaller than a 35mm frame – multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.5 to get the equivalent for the D50 so the 300mm becomes 450mm.

How big a problem is sensor cleaning with DSLR’s,bearing in mind i don’t plan on changing lens at all with it.

Once you get used to it it isn’t too bad but dust tends to show up more with aircraft shots – it will still get in eventually even if you don’t change the lens.
