I think it’s going to be a wet-lease rather than acquiring aircraft. Still begs the question where from? I’d like it to be EZY for no other reason than easyVirgin would make a great (if unlikely name) name.
Much though I look forward to seeing a VS minibus I personally think this is a HUGE mistake.
As already mentioned it’s nigh on impossible to make money on LHR domestic services without huge transfer traffic (BA’s peak MAN LHR MAN flights have something like 90% transfers) and the VS longhaul operation at LHR isn’t big enough to provide that. Bear in mind some of bmi’s biggest losses were on LHR domestics and that was feeding the whole Star LHR operation!
What point to point traffic there is won’t find 3 flights a day sufficiently flexible for their needs.
Adding a completely new operation like this adds complexity and cost to the company.
I hope this works out for them but I hope moreso that this doesn’t turn VS into the next BD just to stroke SRB’s in taking on BA.
Is that seating area still over by the visitor centre? If so BAA will claim that they already have a viewing area.
I’d love to see you succeed, good luck but don’t hold your breath.
That’s because it was designed by the Olympic commitee and Tracey Emin wasn’t involved.
I know that on 737 and A320 family aircraft with low loads seats are often blocked out to ensure the trim is correct and on the 1-11 cabin crew had to check that the right number of people were sat in the right seat rows. I think I’ve seen BE crew checking this on the Q400 too.
I suppose if these procedures are followed then in theory the answer to your question has to be yes.
BA have been busy. These so soon after LCY ABZ and LCY IOM.
I didn’t see any of the LHR shorthaul routes coming but if they’re not just slot sitting then I’m sure BA must be confident they can make them work.
The rationale in simple terms is surely to get as much money for seats as Joe Public is willing to pay and I would pay far more to fly with BE than EZY (just my opinion).
Now that I only fly for leisure I fly with BE a lot and generally find the old Economy and new Essentials and economy fares are very reasonable.
Good news! Here’s hoping the new owners can make a success of it.
Off subject: BD routes from LHR to Bergen, Basel, Nice, Vienna, Stavangar, Hanover, Agadir, Marrakech and Casablanca will have their BD flight numbers replaced with BA ones from May 23. Also the 11 BD 319s will be progressively moved over to the BA fleet (and will be operated by BA crews) at a rate of about 1 a week from the end of May.
It was all downhill when the management lost the plot on dealing with the market around them rapidly changing and long before MAN longhaul which IMHO was part of the downhill slope no-matter how much any of us wanted it to work.
Deano, thanks for the reply, what you say makes complete sense if BE are currently overcrewed. I had assumed (wrongly) that if BE were expanding EMA that they would need to take on flight crew, cabin crew, etc., and that perhaps some of the WW crew could be taken on.
Interesting how we all percieve things differently.
I really rate BA and appreciate the choice of cabins and their differentiation. If I want ‘an aerial bus service’ (on short flights) I book economy, if I want more (longer flights) I book business. If I travel by bus or train for 90 minutes I don’t expect to be fed or watered, what is it about flying I wonder?
I travelled around Europe on business for 20 years or more and found small can’s to be the norm, maybe things have changed since. I know in the US big cans are the norm but they seldom give you the whole thing, usually pouring a glass instead.
As for water fountains, have you ever tasted water from an aircraft tank? Truly, do yourself a favour, buy a bottle of water in the airport.
I agree with you that BA’s cabins are generally tired but I have to wonder how exciting you want an aircraft cabin to be?
Hopefully the WW guys can pick up positions with the expansion planned by BE.
As has been said by others previously I have been in their position several times too and it’s not nice. Good luck to them all.
Welcome. Fantastic picture.
Always loved the 737 from that angle. I remember Air Europe (UK) used to use a fantastic publicity shot of one of their 737s nose on.
They are probably showing EDI HAJ as a route because they codeshare heavily with BA now and can now in theory offer EDI connections.
A look at the Oneworld timetable for various random dates in the summer show EDI LHR STR HAJ or EDI LGW NUE HAJ on various AB/BA codeshare flights, mostly involving a nightstop along the way. I can’t imagine they sell too many of those tickets.
It’s how they keep the fares low.
I’ve never been convinced that free seating speeds up turnrounds or saves airlines money, nor that EZY are cheaper than airlines that allocates seats, however…
You can’t have it both ways.
until it changes I won’t use EZY again even if it does mean paying slightly more for another carrier.
STOP! I want to get off.
