It was an arms race like any other.
In the beginning, the Luftwaffe was far better equipped for the task at hand. By the end, Germany was on its knees and the build quality of it’s aircraft matched the rescources available to it’s manufacturers. In the meantime both countries came up with some incredible advances………………Digger
Parachute Flares
the two photos with the shorter strings look very similar to one I have. Mine is a parachute flare fired from a hand held cylinder, used to illuminate the battlefield during night ops.
The black metal disc is the remains of the flare itself…………..Digger
Someone has to say it…………
Stop that……….it’s very silly……….Digger
Parafield St.Patricks day 2013
On static display at parafield last Sunday.
Before the landing mishap, it was the only airworthy American built example in Oz.
Airshow Safety
The account that ‘aerobatics’ were involved leads one to have some sympathy with the UK LAA view that the type should not be approved for aeros here.
Sad news all the same.
Moggy
Admittedly I was in the car headed for the gate, but I didn’t see any Aero’s as such, just some fast passes and tightish turns. From what I could see, he was on a downwind leg with gear down when he dived in.
I am just hoping this does not spark another anti airshow debate, as in 50 years of attending airshows, this is the first fatatilty I’ve witnessed and only the second serious, the first being Neil Williams in a Stampe at Biggin Hill in the 60s……….Digger
No Moon Tonight
Frederick Forsyths’ The Shepherd. Be a short film mind, probably better as a well executed TV drama.
I second The Shephard as a 1 hour TV Drama, one of my favourite reads.
For my money, I would like to see Don Charlwood’s, semi autobiographical novel, No Moon Tonight, on the big screen…………Digger
Biggin Hill
Static.
With the Hurricane outside the memorial chapel at Biggin Hill circa 1964 (they were real then).
Flying
Not if there was one at the Air Fair that year, MH434 might have been there in civvies.
Certainly at 1964 Biggin Hill Battle of Britain display. There was a “dogfight” between a Hurricane and a Spitfire…………….Digger.
Feeling old
I flew on a few of these when they were new.
How many C130J’s have we got?
Pilots of the Vickers Vimy now at Adelaide Airport
Captain Sir Ross Smith K.B.E., M.C., D.F.C., A.F.C., and his brother Lieutenant Sir Keith Smith K.B.E
Landing in Darwin on December 10th, 1919, the Smith brothers and their two mechanics, Sergeant W.H. Shiers A.F.M. and Sergeant J.M. Bennett A.F.M., M.S.M., completed the flight from Hounslow in 27 days and 20 hours. The brothers received a cheque for 10,000 which they insisted on sharing equally with their two mechanics. They also each received a knighthood for the achievement.
A Survivor
oops that should be VH-BVU
A Survivor
I took this photo of VH-BVS at Jamestown, South Australia a couple of years agow.
With the “Rothmans” it was Neil Williams’ mount, G-AXYW.
Digger, OZ
Corsair in OZ
G’day
I have been to both of those places and managed to see 2 Corsairs and a SBD?? although one of the Corsairs is now under restoration in Oz. I am pretty sure I went to the seaplane base but mainly because it was near one of the airfields that the ‘Black Sheep’ flew from. Can you send me a PM next week and I will dig out whatever info I have – just a little bit busy with cockpitfest at the moment.
Million Dollar point is worth going to, there is a lot of stuff on the beach and a simple snorkel will reveal some amazing things, no diving necessary.
Paul
That would be this one…….
