The RAF’s leading ace over the western desert, test pilot, record breaker and another good bloke bows out. The wind will blow colder over the desert for a while, God bless Neville Duke.

Fantastic! Congratulations to all at BBMF and to Clive Denney for producing AB910 in such an acurate colour scheme. Fluffy I’ve got to agree with you that it is probably the nicest Spitfire scheme of all, it certainly catches the eye, I bet AL Pinner can’t wait to fly her. I know No 303 Sqn. has been depicted before (Hurricane PZ865) but AB910 keeps the memory of Jan Zumbach a great Polish/Swiss fighter pilot/leader alive.

Yes she still has the four bladed prop and the six exhaust cans each side, although I believe that she will be fitted with three cans each side in the near future.:)

Thanks Fluffy for the photo last week, dare I ask is she back in the hanger yet and if so when is S/L Pinner likley to test fly her?
As you can guess I’ve waited a long time for this particular colour scheme to be portrayed on AB910.

The weather at Woodford that year broke at about 11AM, it persisted it down I know as I got soaked! Shortly after the weather had cleared the area XH558 taxied out and took off in a cloud of spray which looked fanastic, she departed south west for a display at RAF. Locking in Somerset. When 558 returned the weather was bright and all the display acts put on their full displays. If my memory serves me right this was 558’s 30th birthday weekend and she was parked with Woodfords Vulcan for a photo shoot.:)

Fantastic pix, I wonder what year the Shuttleworth started cutting the grass at Old Warden as judging by the photos they didn’t bother that much in the 70’s.;)

Money no object? Right to start with Spitfire Tr.8 MT818 / G-AIDN would be back over here in Blighty where she belongs and painted yellow again and could I possibly magic up a DH. Hornet Mk.3 to keep it company?

So ends another chapter in the Spitfire story, Alex Henshaw was at the very forefront of that story and will probably go down as the finest non combat pilot that this country has ever produced. Many things will be written about Alex but all I can now say with great sadness is goodbye Alex Henshaw, top bloke.

Secret Army has just finished a run on one of the cable channels, some good footage of Mossie RR299 in some episodes. The series stands the test of time very well and Clifford Rose as Ludwig Kessler was the epitomy of a Gestapo officer, very sinister!

The airfield is RAF. Syerston ex 5 Group Bomber Command and now home to the RAF’s gliding organization. Syerston is the airfield that Bill Reid flew from to win his VC.with No. 61 Sqn. Another future VC. to serve at Syerston was Guy Gibson when he commanded No. 106 Sqn with Lancasters. From 1944 Syerston became home to No. 5 Groups Lancaster Finishing School (5.LFS). Post war Syerston was used mainly by Training Command.:)
