The J-6 in action! 😀
The J-6 probably had the best kill ratio against Western planes among MiG variants.
This includes F-4s, A-6s, F-105s and at least one F-104 killed by the PLAAF and PLANAF during the Vietnam War. Rarely publicized during the war years because US administrations didn’t want to expand hostility, these were USAAF/USN aircraft that crossed over into Chinese territory. Navy aircraft on Yankee station were particularly vulnerable because they often flew near Hainan island which was patrolled by several very aggressive units of the PLA Navy’s air arm.
On September 19, 1965, F-104C pilot Major Philip E. Smith of 436th TFS was shot down near Hainan island by the PLANAF. Smith was captured and then released after Nixon went to China in 1972.
