Damn, I’m sorry to hear this news. 🙁

The BBC has a story which says basically they’ve heard something happened, but don’t yet know quite what:

Condolences to everyone involved. That’s a terrible event at what should be a great show.

Unfortunately this is where things fall down where new users are concerned. You cannot expect someone who just wants a usable system to have to tweak it. Until Linux has a 99.9% stable, self-installing desktop interface that works out of the box for everyone, your average Joe Punter will remain using Windows.

SuSE is almost there – I have been using it for 8 years now and love it. It has got to the stage where we can offer a machine running both SuSE Linux and Windows to computer illiterate family members and they are happy using either. However, I’d not expect them to be able to install it just yet by themselves – there’s always *something* that needs looking at afterwards.

I remain a Linux fan, but am currently spending most of my time on Mac OSX. This has the stability of Linux, with the user-friendliness that Joe Punter expects. OK, you don’t have the range of games available as you do for Windows, but then not everyone plays games….. Horses for courses…. It’s still a great system.

    Glad you’re both OK, Moggy.

We had almost exactly the same accident last summer, returning from Waddington on the A11 near Thetford. Muntjac deer vs. Volkswagen Golf at 60mph resulted in one dead deer and the loss of both main and air conditioning radiators, which leaked all over the lay-by we pulled up in. This was about a week before we were due to trade in the the Golf for a new car, as well…

I apologise; I think I’ve given you the wrong end of the stick. What I meant was that I have a Nikon film scanner and an Epson flatbed. They are separate entities and I know of no Nikon attachments for anyone else’s flatbed scanners.

What other people are saying about higher-end flatbeds with film attachments is OK if you only want low-resolution copies of images, or are very sure you won’t be printing any.

If you want to print some out – and I know from experience that images on the screen just don’t look as nice as printed ones done to a decent quality – then you need a film scanner with ICE. These do come at a price, but you very much get what you pay for.

Hope this clears things up a little.

I’ve been pretty happy with my Nikon film/Epson flatbed setup, and they both work just fine on XP, Mac OSX and Linux.

The film scanner will take strips of film up to 6 frames, and the dust/scratch removal (ICE) is worth its weight in gold.

I’m there, if only in spirit. The memorial isn’t a million miles from my home in the UK – I’ll have to come over and see it when we return.

    In the UK, Beer, mostly.

Usually a decent British ale; the smaller the brewery, the better!

If we’re in our local then it tends to be Veltins, a German lager; or Krony 1664 if we’re elsewhere, in a lager mood and Veltins or Staropramen is not available.

At home, bottles of Pilsener Urquell, cans of Lowenbrau, that sort of thing. No nasty Stella for us – gives us a headache, that does…

In the US, we have acquired a taste for light beer. In the heat here it makes sense – you can drink gallons of the stuff and remain mostly sober…

Wine is expensive in the US so we haven’t had any since being here. At home we drink US/SA/AUS/FR whites and reds, mostly.

Port is always good and G&T has to be made with Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray…

This chap fell from my garage door the other day, and skittered off into the corner after obligingly allowing me to take this photo:
