We were in Ipswich last spring sometime on a bright blue-skied day, and looked up in response to an unusual jet noise to see the silver Sabre flying over our heads at about 1500 feet. That was the first time I saw a Sabre in the air, and lovely it was too.
Not exactly warbirds, this, but good timing: I was watching Godsmack in an open-air concert the other day, and at the start of their show, they play a film showing various helicopters in combat situations. As this was running, from the hospital next door came an air ambulance helicopter, right over the top of the stage, banking over as hard as it would go and roaring off over our heads…
My turn 🙂

There’s usually a good, small air display at the end of the event.[/B]
Oh, how could I have forgotten? if Xavier de Lapparent is flying, go there just to watch him. He does things in his Su-26 which bend the laws of physics.

futurshox: I’m jealous that you got to see the airshow put on by the Lone Star Flight Museum. They have an awesome collection. I saw it for the first time in December of ’01. From what I was told by a gentleman working their nearly all the aircraft are owned by one man, he’s just nice enough to put them on display for us to see.One aircraft that was on loan when I visited was an A-36 Mustang. Was it still there and did it happen to fly at the airshow? [/B]
No, we didn’t see the A-36. Is that the same one that flew at Legends last year in the UK? Strangely enough, we have seen very few Mustangs in Texas. I’m sure there must be more about, but I don’t know where… We did see ‘Su Su II’, owned and flown by Frank Borman. He is an Apollo 8 astronaut and flew at the Burnet airshow in company with an F-16.
Aerofair is normally pretty good, although you get the impression it’s getting smaller each year – maybe not in the number of aircraft, but in numbers of trade stands. Having said that, it’s a good place to pick up cheap-ish pilot gear and there’s always some interesting aircraft types that turn up. The burgers served up outside the Squadron are the best thing since Mildenhall, too 😉
I believe this year, they are kicking the Saturday market out in order to use that side of the airfield – check this though! – and go on Sunday if that is not the case, or you’ll be waiting in traffic for ages…
I’m in Texas for a few months while my partner works in his company’s Austin office 🙂
I am finding it my pleasant duty to investigate the local aviation activity, of which there is quite a bit at the moment 😀 I think it’ll quieten down in the summer heat though.
Moggy, your eloquent post has made a cracking start to my morning 😉
Being currently in the US, I can confirm that most people here are shocked at the price of flying in the UK. I’m often asked why I am not a pilot, but once I explain the cost of it, people kind of understand!
Edited to add:
Whiskey Delta, from memory the airspace around Duxford is actually in one of the less densely populated areas of activity, so those pilots are freer than most to fly about as they please. However you don’t have to go far to find controlled airspace- Stansted to the South, Mildenhall/Lakenheath to the Northwest etc. I’m sure the actual pilots on this board can fill us in on height clearances etc. Flying in places like Wales or Scotland is much less restricted, however you do have to watch out for low flying RAF jets.
OK, I’ve just found this thread, so here’s me at 1000 feet above Galveston in the B-17 ‘Thunderbird’:

I understand the one at Duxford has nothing in the cockpit – hence it’s never opened on FOD access nights.

Most forums don’t like Sc’unthorpe either 😉
Don’t worry about it. My first lesson/flights were in a 152 and I loved it. Doesn’t matter what you’re in for the first time! Just enjoy the flying…
