Gosh, you guys are quicker than me. I looked on BT’s phone book and didn’t see him. Thanks for the PM, Ashley. I’ll phone him after work as soon as I can, I’m so keen to know if it’s the same chap!
Wow, how very excellent! Ron, thank you so much for showing it to Mr Vial and thank him also for providing all that information.
I would be very happy to provide a high-resolution scan or a print of the picture for relatives who wanted a copy.
Now, I wonder if Squadron Leader L. S. M. Bailey lives/lived in Bury St Edmunds? Let me see…
Hello everybody, I’m resurrecting this thread to say that the photo seems to have been in most of the papers in East Anglia as far as I can tell! It’s in the current issue of the Bury Free Press. They contacted me to say that a Mrs Boyton though she recognised someone in it, although she doesn’t claim to own the picture. I spoke to her and she thinks the tall guy on the right is her uncle, Neville Elford.
Does a name help in tracking things down? If nobody else comes forward, Mrs Boyton is happy for me to take it up to the Rougham Tower Association for the museum there.
News to me that I work for Oxfam! That was obviously the edited version 😉
Nice to see the story is being picked up though.
Well, the East Anglian Daily Times have printed it on page 12 of today’s edition. Thanks again for your help in fleshing out some information on the photo. Let’s see if anything comes of it!

All sounds like a lot of fun to me. Good luck with it 🙂
Ah, thanks! I see it now 🙂
Wow, thank you everyone for all this fascinating information. I’m always amazed at the wealth of knowledge in this forum. And I’m glad you are enjoying the photo!
I confess I am no expert on Lancasters – what is ‘T for Tommy’? I think your eyes are better than mine, I don’t see a ‘T’ on it anywhere. Or am I missing something (more than likely!) ?
🙂
I know I’m way too late but in case Plan A resurfaces…

Here’s a look at Monewden, taken late June this year:

Excellent stuff! I think WIG craft are great.
Rougham is a fiver.
I did indeed have fun 🙂 It was just a fly-in, but they booked the Stearman and the RV-8 for added interest, and it was a gathering of the Aeronca Clbu as well so plenty of that type showed up.
Or you could cheat and do it with PHP. You can write a script to take in the source image and spit out a new one with whatever you like written over it. However you need a knowledge of PHP programming and a half decent web server to make this work.
