    * low whistle *

    yup that is a looker. Still to my -untrained- eye the boing plane looks good if perhaps more expensive than the raytheon and northrop ones. It seems to have more growth capacity, indeed able to be a light strike fighter if needs be. Nose certainly has the diameter for a fairly useful radar.

    Perhaps he was kidding, totally off topic however.

    I think the boink plane looks teh hottest. And as we all know, the man said ‘if it looks good, it flies good’ so the LockMart McPlane should be binned for the hideous abortion it is.

    Oh man that Northrop demonstrator looks SO much better, cheaper and more efficient than that LockMart abomination!

    I was there and was pleasantly surprised. I was impressed with the acceleration, the speed (they flew them very fast ) and their turns, and built quality. It looked almost solid.

    I know right, The thing closest to it in build quality was the Eurofighter, but even that looked far less smooth and “perfect”. In fact they parked a MiG-29, an F-16 and the Eurofighter in a row and they were remarkably different in build quality, the MiG looking positively agricultural, the F-16 had rivets showing and some dents, a bit like a car from the 80s while the Eurofighter looked smooth and very well fitting. The F-35 is even smoother.

    What do a Toyota pickup and an old 23mm VYa cost? What do 500 rounds of .50 cal full metal jacket cost? What do your beautifully miniaturized PGMs cost per round? ma deuce is a winning proposition economically speaking.

    Or we should acknowledge that we aren’t blowing up that toyota because we think it needs blowing up for a greater goal, but the expensive PGM needs expending for our domestic industrial interest.

    I am confused.. is the F-35A IOC now?

    Yes. But. The goalposts defining what IOC entails did get moved in order to make it happen. The general dude even admitted to that in the large bit of copypasta upthread.

    So nobody thought to bring an IR camera to an airshow? sheeeeit, i might need to get me one for that, just to end this debate. heh or spark a furious new round of it.

    Oh yeah those shock condensations were F’ing spectacular. well and truly jaw dropping. More to do with circumstances than any qualities of the airframe tho, right?

    I had expected the plane to be bigger, more ungainly. In the air it seemed quite nimble, displaying a fine and precise roll rate among other things. I was pleasantly surprised. The skin of the plane sure looks like a billion dollars, even smoother than the eurofighter, which makes the F-16 parked next to it look primitive. And then there was a MiG-29. That thing looked bloody well agricultural in the way it was put together. Anyway, just some n00bs mk1 eyeball observations.
