The owner voluntarily closed it for two months after the Old Buckenham PA28 overran the runway last week according to the local Radio station.
Florida
PA28 crashed at Northrepps today by all accounts, three in hospital with back injuries from the rumours flying around.
The 310 owner seldom flies now but he had a Piston Provost after that and various twins, one of which ended up on the fire dump and subsequently in the local aviation museum due to unpaid fees. I think the Auster was an AOP 9.
I’d forgotten about the runway bar, the GA centre is on the A140 now. I went over there the other day and found out the old flying club bar and restaurant is under new ownership and open to the public. Its been refurbished with loads of pictures and stuff illustrating the history of RAF Horsham St Faith/Norwich Airport. Well worth a visit. No pictures of AFT’s aircraft though.
I must admit I flew with them for a while and quite liked the atmosphere that the club had on the ground in their little portakabin. Nowadays a lot of flying clubs seem to be a bit up themselves and like to dress up with golden fish fingers on their shoulders and tell everyone how good they are. I think that flying schools should be more fun on the ground and very disciplined in the air. Too many want to take the money and boot the student out of the door after the flight. Still happy days in the 80s at Norwich, if a little strange!
Well I thought they were excellent, probably some of the best I’ve seen recently.
I remember the incident well, I saw the practice you were probably sitting through and thought that it was a bit extreme low down. The school continued on for a few more years run by the brother. It closed when everyone moved on to flying commercially on airliners I think.
Things were different in those days!
I Ran out of Fuel once 4 miles out from Norwich at 4,000′, I seemed to get precedence over the other traffic then…..
When did this happen, I can’t remember anyone having an engine failure through fuel starvation in the area recently. Was it some time ago?
Reminds me of a day I helped out with at Norwich last month, 76 disabled kids were flown around Norfolk.
Aircraft were supplied free of charge by Chalky and Gail White (C172 G-OTAM), Nigel Willson (Robin G-CCCN) and Anglia Flight (C150s G-BUCA and G-BABD). Landing fees were waived by Norwich Airport, fuel was supplied FOC by Air BP and food was supplied by Happy Landings bar and restaurant. The whole thing took place from Hangar 10. A completely worthwhile day and a rare example of a regional airport and GA cooperating.
slightly off topic but does anyone know if these markings for “Ropey” are available for a 1/72nd scale model? i have got five unmade (and one almost completed) model lancasters and not decided on all the markings yet, those i have decided on are ! gibsons dam raid aircraft (almost complete) 2, (617 grand slam) 3,9 sqn standard B111, 4, Hendons S-sugar, for another i am thinking of converting it to a lancastrian, any other ideas folks?
cheers,
Greg
Hannants at Lowestoft used to sell a set.
I’ve been three times….not bothering this year.
Too many people as its a freebie, (Although Pakefield Cliffs not usually too bad).
Very badly organised display.
Its pi**** down every time I’ve been
You would think the organisers would be more organised when its for nothing wouldn’t you
Was rebuilt at Arrow Air Centre from cache of Tiger Moth remains recovered from India. First one rebuilt, leased to Norfolk and Norwich Aero Club but crashed whilst performing slow roll very low over Swanton Morley. Rebuilt again at Shipdham but crashed on take off.
74 squadron I think.
Excellent review, based on the admission fee and the numbers there I’m looking forward to hearing about the 5 figure sum donated by charity in the aviation press in due course.
Lancaster and 2 Spitfires according to BBMF’s website.
