I’m also well aware of the other functions of EGPWS, I just used the most important mode as an example.
We are all just human and if you feel that automated systems in airliners will stop accidents (sometimes apparently dumb ones) you are wrong. Sh*t happens and I for one would prefer to have a couple of experienced humans trying to sort it out when it does.

Altitude is an inferred reading and airspeed is an inferred reading – both susceptible to external effects on the aircraft.
Aircraft pitch and throttle/thrust are not. It is not unreasonable to expect people whose core damn job is knowing how to fly an aircraft to know that.
Have you ever studied how an E.E.C works or any FADEC system? They use airspeed, pressures, pressure altitudes, temperatures, ram air effect. All classed as external effects perhaps? All affecting thrust? Definitely.
