    India Test Fires Nuclear-Capable Missile
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, NEW DELHI, INDIA

India on Oct. 24 test fired its nuclear-capable Agni-1 ballistic missile for the second time in less than a month and said the latest experiment was a “major success.”

The Agni-1 has a range of 420 miles, making it capable of striking at most targets in rival and neighboring Pakistan.

It was launched from a missile test range in the eastern state of Orissa, officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said in New Delhi.

“The system that we tested today has more maneuverability and better re-entry technology than the missile that was launched on October 5,” said a DRDO official who asked not to be named.
“It is a major success,” the official added.

The launch was conducted by India’s recently-established strategic armed forces, signaling Agni-1’s official induction into the million-plus military, defense experts said.

“The performance parameters of the missile were as expected and the desired objectives have been met”, a defense ministry spokesman added.
The Agni — Sanskrit for fire — is a 39-foot medium-range ballistic missile that can be fired from mobile launchers and can carry a 1-ton warhead.

Russia to build six nuclear aircraft carriers
    25 August 2007

Russian Admiral Vladimir Masorin recently said his fleet would get six new nuclear powered aircraft carriers in the next 20 years, in a path breaking increase and modernisation of the country’s maritime power. While three carrier groups would be assigned to the Pacific fleet, the remainder would serve with the northern fleet in European waters.

Masorin also said Russia should establish a permanent naval presence in the Mediterranean, to protect its strategic interests in the area. He had earlier announced Russia was building new bases in its Far East territory for surface ships and missile-armed submarines.

While there is the factor of the Russian parliamentary elections this December and the presidential elections in March 2008 behind the sabre rattling, Russia’s plans for a stronger navy seem serious.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 18 August that the Russian air force would resume regular, long-range patrols by nuclear-capable bombers over the world’s oceans, including the Pacific, after a 15-year span.

Russia’s oil and gas exports are now fetching record prices, and financing the country’s military modernisation, along with arms sales to China, India and other big buyers. The ongoing US-Russian impasse over a proposed missile shield in Eastern Europe seems to be behind Russia’s announcing these major hikes in its military budget.

The widening gulf between the two nations comes as Russia seeks to parlay its hydrocarbon wealth into an expanded role on the world stage and recently made claims to Arctic which may contain huge resources of natural gas.

Exercise Malabar-6 is scheduled to start in bay of bengal from Sept4.

Japan is sending two ships, Singapore one and Australia two. USN is sending
a big troop consisting of two CVN (nimitz & khawk), 1 SSN, 2 Tico, 6 Burke, plus
    support ships.

IN is sending almost everything that can sail and fly except harbour tugs and
the kilo SSK which is always absent from exercises with western navies.

Tezpur is a big base..as former home of MOFTU it housed dozens of Mig21 trainers in the past. recovery bases exist across the river in jorhat, dibrugarh.

its also ideally located for intel aircraft to monitor both the eastern part of tibet plateau and east into yunnan province…with very little transit time to the border in all directions.

well thats just the latest in a list of ‘compromises’ for the SH :diablo: dunno why they cant do it F-14 style!

realistically, a SH stands no chance in a close-in encounter with a Rafale so in BVR unless the French enter a AESA radar of high quality, the APG79 rules the roost + the new meatier amraam.

US is into 3rd gen AESA and the EU/Israel is still playing with prototypes of their 1st gen. Ru doesnt have a flying prototype even.

    US 23 -vs- rest:0
    😀

if political relations are equal I’d run with the SH over Rafale. I love the benefits
$100b of R&D capex /annum can provide my team

It may be more likely they would sell the JSF to Pakistan if Pakistan had more money.

in my living memory US has never _sold_ fighters to Pak for money. it has always been in the form of outright gifts or payments for services rendered on
    other issues.

hence if we see JSF enter the area, it will again be as payment for catching
    the 300th sample of Al-Queda #3 in 2020 probably

Ja, license assembly by Italy in no way insulates the user from US sanctions because they can always deny made in US parts and technical support. I think
people are misinterpreting the article, the engines will be made in US surely no
reason why system integrator needs to build it.

but anyway, IN seems to have decided to trust the US for a while – all the P17 ships have twin LM2500 engines and Renk(germany) gearboxes.

imo MMR may find a role in HALs upcoming CAT AJT which will supplement the
Hawk. IAF will need a AESA is a fighter serving after 2010 and that is called EL-2052. the 2032 maybe a convenient stepping stone into final configuration.

its very hard for a new unproven radar to match across the spectrum a mature
and proven soln like APG68-v9 that America has arranged to supply on F-16.
