one doesnt become a competent carrier navy overnight just by throwing money at the problem. if PRC harbours ambitions of becoming a carrier navy someday (they need to if they want to supplant the USN in east asia), then best way is to start somewhere small like varyag and work to build institutions and competence. the skills arent going to appear magically even if two 80,000t CVNs emerge from a secret shipyard.

there are situations where a datalink could be of use – like targeting a really fast ship at max range, or decoying a target with a false run at another then changing course at last moment. the platform providing the course update neednt be anywhere near the launch platform.

a 9000t sub is a lil obese though to be going into shallow waters for spyin and keepin an eye on the unfaithful. they should have just purchased a couple of trafalgar boats off UK and used that logically.
but I guess once built they had to find a use for the Cold war relic.

Chirac confirms India’s purchase of 6 Scorpene submarines, 43 Airbus planes
    09.12.2005, 07:57 AM

PARIS (AFX) – President Jacques Chirac confirmed an order from India for six Franco-Spanish Scorpene submarines, alongside a 43-plane order for Airbus, as he received visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Elysee palace.

The Scorpene order is valued at 2.4 bln eur, while the order for 20 Airbus A-319s, 19 A-321s and four A-320s from Airbus is worth 1.8 bln eur.

Both deals had been in the works for several years. The Scorpene submarines are built by France’s DCN shipyards and Spain’s Izar.

‘I welcome the prime minister confirming to us today India’s decision concerning the purchase of six Scorpene submarines and 43 Airbus planes,’ Chirac told journalists as he greeted Singh.

He called the deals ‘a measure of the friendship, trust and cooperation’ between their two countries.

Singh was the first foreign leader to see Chirac since the 72-year-old president was released from hospital last Friday after suffering what his doctors called a minor vascular problem.

the drawing seems to suggest that, with the caveat of maybe multiple rotor & stator stages just like a turbine compressor. maybe the shroud helps to reduce the noise dispersion to a narrow cone behind the sub…rather than omnidirectional with a exposed single prop.

even the conventional props on SSKs seem to be closely guarded secrets. U-212 photos on dock always have the prop covered with a cloth.

so I’d think anyone who knows the internal layout of real in-service SSN kit will be keeping very quiet.

2012 or 2112 what diff does it make to star49? Scorpenes are for dealing with dragon. I got this cached report from google (paksearch.com) which says 3rd A90 was supposed to be commissioned in 2002 😀

    19991221

    Agosta 90-B commissioning today

KARACHI: Chief Executive Gen. Pervez Musharraf will be the chief guest at the commissioning ceremony of the first state-of-the-art French Agosta 90-B submarine of Pakistan Navy PNS-M Khalid at the Pakistan Naval Dockyard in Karachi on December 21.

The Agosta 90-B submarine,a faster and deeper diving vessel, incorporates improvement based on the experience gained by the French Navy and new advances in endurance, acoustic discretion, propulsion and diving capability. The vessel of an overall length of 67 metres, having submerged speed of 40 knots 😀 , can dive deep more than 300 metres, while its sub-surface endurance capability is of over 60 days.

The fully integrated combat system of the submarine enables the commanding officer to quickly evaluate its tactical situation and decide on an appropriate response. The submarine could be equipped to launch multipurpose torpedoes and Exocet SM-39 sub-launched anti-ship missiles.

Pakistan had signed an agreement of nearly one billion US dollars with Direction des Constructions Navales DCN International of France in 1994 for the purchase of three Agosta 90-B submarines alongwith transfer of technology.

During the construction of the first Agosta 90-B submarine, engineers and technicians of Pakistan Navy have been given special training including transfer of technology in France so that Pakistan achieves self-sufficiency in construction of submarines.

The second Agosta 90-B submarine is currently under construction by Pakistan Navy’s engineers and technicians with the help of French engineers at Naval Dockyard in Karachi and would be inducted in Pakistan Naval Fleet in early year 2001. Work on the construction of the third submarine is also underway at the

Naval Dockyard here and would be commissioned in the year 2002.

agosta90 is 15years older than scorpene design and has a different lineage from old agosta family of 70s. the hull shape is outdated compared to new SSK designs.

Scorpene came out of rubis amethyste SSN design and is pretty much up there with the U214 yardstick as the two most sophisticated large SSKs on the market presently.

I will grant that pakistan is among the fastest in the world at approving projects like the army chief who musharaff busted recently for buying al-khalid TI kits in a 15-day decision cycle. its your country and your life to run, no comments there.

    dont pollute this thread though.

I believe the Foxtrots are off active duty for long now.

decision to go with exocets maybe passed on commitment to deliver MM-40 SLASM in 6 years which *should* be possible considering france has loads of tech for that kind of job (apache and asmp for example). sub launched Apache would be quite juicy.

didnt the USN practise hiding CVNs inside the fjords as difficult-to-target bases?

and couldnt the Soviet SSBNs just hide out inside the White Sea, with its narrow mouth protected by a SSN+ASW screening force. their SLBMs had enough range from there to target all of europe, china, japan and north america…why risk a battle under the ice with packs of roving ssns ?

a very interesting page on U209, 212, 214. I hadnt realized 212 and 214 are so different. anyway, it says (just like IN) that HDW AIP tech is better than DCN MESMA.

    http://www.areamilitar.net/opiniao/U214_U212_ing.asp

time for india to call upon old friends in Berlin :diablo: HDW can still make a lot
of marks selling the AIP plug.

Saturn5, yes they will cut the U209 if deal is done.

I was trying to compare the hull shapes of modern subs and came up with:

    Scorpene: “albacore tuna” SSN shape
    http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/scorpene/images/scorpene1.jpg

    Agosta90B – old U-boat cigar shape
    http://www.strategycenter.net/imgLib/20041101_11Agosta90B.jpg

    U 209 – U-boat shape
    http://users.otenet.gr/~kostast/U209.jpg

    U 212 – SSN shape
    http://www.subnetitalia.it/skkprojetcopertina.jpg

    Kilo SSN shape
    http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/kilo/kilo9.html

since all the SSN/SSBN use the tuna shape, I assume for larger vessels it is always
better for submerged speed. the newest SSK designs like U212 and Scorpene are going that shape also…so I kinda assume its useful for smaller vessels also ?

the question remains whether india will go for (a) No AIP (b) MESMA (c) HDW-cells

since Scorpene wont be carrying nuclear deterrant , submerged endurance isnt a
huge factor. in future I expect IN ATV and/or license made Amur to take that role.

U212 has only been recently offered and france has done a lot more for india politically and technology wise than germany. most of the time germany has spent acting holier-than-thou on the nuclear issue while their own companies were freely selling chemical and nukular tech to iran, libya, pakistan and similar distinguished client list in 1970s and 80s.

france has far more relations in delhi.
