RE: A very ridiculous article from a Canadian newspaper

    Rabie,

our nuclear programme has absolutely nothing to do with nuclear bombing capacibility. Brazil has lots of nuclear knowledge but it is applied to only 3 nuclear usines (which are very critized by the way, and there is no way any further one be ever constructed) and to a future nuclear powered submarine, but even this programme is paralised due to lack of money. There were some stupid comments that our VLS (veiculo lançador de satelites – sattelites launcher vehicle) should be used as a long-range nuclear ballistic missile, but this is bulls**t. By the way, its firsts 2 launchings were not succeded and a 3rd one is expected to be launched at end of this year or in the beginning of 2003. There is also a 300km range G2G missile that was developed by Avibras (using its own funds), but this missile is apparently not compatible with nuclear warheads and wasnt bought by Brazilian Army yet.
Well, of course, we can build a nuclear bomb in a short time if wanted, once we already have advances in urinaum enrichment, but, believe me, its almost impossible to ever happen.

RE: Images of your police force.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-10-02 AT 01:00 PM (GMT)]Ok, here in Brazil, police corps are organized pretty much like in US: each states has its own police organization, and there is a federal police (like the FBI) to take care of federal crimes. And, in each state, there are 2 kind of police organizations: a civilian one and a military one. Making a very short explanation: civilian police takes care of investigations and military police takes care of police streets and stuff like that. There are also ‘highway police’ and as we have state highways and federal highways, there are also state highway polices and federal highway polices. Confusing, huh? As I do think we all here are pretty much more aviation lovers than cars and boats lovers, I’ll just pictures from police helicopters.
This one is a HB-350 Esquilo (Ecureil) used by PMSC (Santa Catarina Military Police) and that I see everyday overflying my house

This one is a Bell 206-L4 LongRanger IV which belongs to the military police from the state where I was born.

And at last, this is a Federal Highway Police Bell 407 that is often based in an aeroclub near my house

P.S.: none of these pictures were taken by myself!

    Brazilians

I’ve just remembered one that is about ourselves!

One city government decides to build a bridge, and to decides who is gonna build it the mayor starts a tender. 3rd builders gets in the tender: one American, one Bolivian and one Brazilian.
The mayor decides to talk with the American first:
Mayor: How much is it gonna cost?
    American: US$ 1,000,000.
Mayor: Why do you think it may cost that?
American: Well, we’re gonna use the most advanced technologies in bridges construction and contract the best operaries, etc…
So the mayor decides to listen the Bolivian’s proposal:
Mayor: How much are you thinking to charge us for this bridge?
    Bolivian: US$20,000
    Mayor: Ow, that’s cheap!
Bolivian: Yes. We’re gonna use some old woods that I’ve found in the rubbish of a old building which came down.
So finally, the mayor go talking to the Brazilian…
Mayor: So how much is it gonna cost if you gets responsible for this bridge construction?
    Brazilian: US$2,020,000
Mayor: Why is that so expensive?!?!?!?
Brazilian: Look, man. I get US$1 milion, you get US$1 milion and we pay US$20,000 for the Bolivian build the bridge.

RE: Should we interfere in other countries affairs?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-10-02 AT 12:07 PM (GMT)]> Essentially the problem in Brazil doesn´t have much to do

    >have huge amount of timber over here, at least as far as

Internal greed?!?!? Ok, all oil producers countries have also an “internal greed” problem.

    >As you point out, forests are cut to
    >provide more earth for farming, but also for searching of
    >gold, gas, and these is usually driven by “garimpeiros” or
    >local mafia landowner who gets lots of benefit from
    >exploting the farmers.

Amazon forests are not cut to provide land for farming!! Its ground quality really sucks!!! There are very few crops which can be produced in Amazon, and, anyway, with a very poor quality and quantity. Gold has already been a very serious threat to Amazon till the ’80s when all the gold reserves esgotated. Gas prodution in Amazon is a example of “sustentable developing” for the whole world. The biggest problem in Amazon is really illegal wood cutting. Brazilian government is making some efforts (for example, installing the whole SIVAM system) in order to combat this.

Mate, I know we dont respect Indian rights very much, but anyway I guess we are one of the best countries in dealing with them. Some tribes in Amazon have areas as big as the countries where much of you live (Netherlands, Belgium, …). But, unhappily, some little tribes dont have a defined territory on yet because our government’s burocracy is really really slow! And once they have their area, they sure will not produce anything to develop the area, because they have a culture to produce just what they consume (except, when the tribe is near towns, so they starting producing baskets and stuff like that to sell in towns and then they become miserables). And, anyway, it couldnt be different because as I’ve said before Amazon has a very poor ground. I am also for a rational use of the jungle because the whole richness is meanly minerals which sure have to be more studied and researched before starting any sustentable exploration just like we are already doing with gas.

    Regards,
    Junin

P.S.: Portugueses and Spanishs destroyed our Atlantic jungle which was just a little smaller than the Amazon.
