RE: The West responsability with the Third World
Ok guys, I’m from a Third World country so I guess I can comment a little better on this, but as long as I dont know enough about African and Asian situation, I’ll restrict my comments to Latin American situation.
Our problem isnt in fact lack of food or even, lack of money. Our problem is much about polital irresponsability, very stupid concentration of money and very huge international debt. Many countries in Latin America such as Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, have great possibilities to become 1st World countries but the problems I’ve already mentioned dont let us go ahead in many important areas, such as education and general social matters. The best rich countries would do for us is to forgive our international debts. Brazil spend, each year, something like 50% of all the money it gets, in the debt payment. This lets very few money to be invested in our social and technological development. There are also the others 2 problems, but these are up to ourselvers to solve them.

Junin

Hostages die in Moscow operation
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-10-02 AT 04:24ย PM (GMT)]MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) — Sixty-seven hostages died during an operation to free hundreds of captives held by Chechen rebels in a Moscow theatre and two hostage-takers remain at large, Russian officials have said.
Thirty-four hostage-takers were also killed after Russian special forces, the Federal Security Service, stormed the building at 5.30 a.m. local time on Saturday after the Chechens began executing those being held, Russia’s deputy interior minister, Vladimir Vasilyev, said.
Movsar Barayev, the ringleader of the Chechen group, is confirmed dead and at least two other members of it are being interrogated.
“We are grieving with those close to the 67 hostages who were lost. We couldn’t save them… We saved more than 750 people,” Vasilyev said outside the theatre, adding that there were no children among the dead.
But he said: “Two of the terrorists escaped and we are combing the territory. They are hiding themselves in houses.”
“Up to the last moment — even now — we were afraid there could be a major explosion. This we managed to prevent,” he said. “These people we’re dealing with are real scoundrels. They were constantly giving their threats. They were threatening to start executions which they did. They threated to explode the building.”
Refering to reports that a gas injected into the theatres by special forces ahead of the operation may have contributed to the deaths of some of the hostages, he said: “This is not so.
“Of those who died, some were through stress, hunger and lack of medical supplies that they needed.”
All 75 foreign nationals, from 14 countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Britain and the United States, are alive, diplomats said after the raid that ended the three-day

RE: What kind of aircraft does the head use?
Brazil: our Air Force has a fleet just destined for VIP transport which consist of 2 737-200, 9 Gates Learjet 35A, 1 55A, 1 EMB-120 Brasilia, 6 EMB-121 Xingu, 1 HB-355 Esquilo (Ecureil) and 1 AS-532 Cougar. Our President has at his disposition also 4 KC-137 which were in charge of long-range travels till some years ago, when it was set an agreement for the use of its A330s in Presidential long-range travels. There were some speculations some years that Brazilian Air Force would buy some KC-10s, B767 or, even, the Argentinan Presidential aircraft (a B757) to replace ours KC-137s but nothing serious really happened.

RE: MASSIVE BOMB KILLS 171 IN BALI TERROR ATTACK
Glenn,
I’ve heard that there are 2 Brazilians disappeared, including one military who is part of the UN Peace Force in East Timor. There is another Brazilian military who was close to the place where the explosion occured, but he just had his face cutted a little bit. Apparently, some soldiers who were in mission in East Timor were sent to Bali right after the attack.

RE: Brazilian industry launches an airplane move by alcohol
Well, I think it’s cleaner and, anyway, it’s renovable. Here in Brazil, using ethanol as fuel is not just a political thing; it’s also a economical (specially now, that dollars price is in stratophere) and social solution (creating many jobs). About oil, we can actually can hold something around 50% of our demanding with our own production (for those who dont know Brazil is a top leading nation in oil technologies… just check who is the oil provider for Williams F-1 team). I really dont know from where it comes the others 50% but our government has just started a program some years ago to provide our industries with natural gas. This way, it was built a gasodute from Bolivia.

RE: Brazilian industry launches an airplane move by alcohol
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-10-02 AT 04:15ย PM (GMT)]Mixtec,
Cars which uses gasoline must be something like 90% of our fleet. But what happens, is that in Brazil, our gasoline is mixed with alcohol. I guess 30% of our gasoline is not gasoline; it’s alcohol! And it’s absolutely not discusting because our problem isnt lack of food but lack of money, and this sugar cane plantations create lots of new jobs, specially for very poor people.
About natural gas, the number of cars (meanly cabs) which are running on it is quickly increasing, but it’s still very limited to big cities due to a very reduced number of places where you can find it.
