There are only 2 Ka27 on the photo, that’s normal complement of Udaloy class destroyer, which also participated in the exercise. Why should they be Chinese?

Yes, as I already wrote, this could be Russian Ka-27. And the helicopter of Guangzhou could be the Harbin Z-9C between the two Helixs.

During the Sino-India drill there were pics of ka-28 operating off some chinese DDG…

I can’t remember if its the 167 or the new 052B…
If someone could dig up those photos.

I did not know these photos. I know a photo of Guangzhou and over it there were two Ka-28 (or Ka-27) and one Harbin Z-9C. Guangzhou flied a Chinese and a Russian flag – a Sino-Russian exercise?. Therefore the Helix could be Russian. Also Guangzhou has only a hangar for one helicopter:

Don’t know that we can really say if the PLAN has any TAS in service. We should be able to spot winch gear etc for VDS but that won’t necessarily tell us if there is a TAS attached to the equipment.

There is no visible equipment for a towed sonar on the stern of the Type 052B and Type 052C. Therefore I doubt, that they have such sonar. Or does someone know a ship, which certainly has such sonar, but it is not visible?

    Ka-28 on 052B

This is no Ka-28 on the Guangzhou! You can clearly see, that Guangzhou is still not finished. And the Ka-28 is a dummy. It is clear, if you look at the rotor and if you compare it to a real Ka-28. This photos is a hint, that a Helix fits in the hangar. But not more. I also never seen a Ka-28 on Type 052B or Type 052C, but I guess, that they will be equipped with it.

Besides: on this photo are no opening for a towed sonar.

Building many military ships in your own yards is a very bad idea as the shipbuilders hardly get any profit out of that, sometimes they even pay parts themselves. On the other hand if you keep their slipways open to much more profitable commercial ships and buy foreign military ships it’s much better for your economy.

Are you sure? Military products have very often prices, which can be only called subsidy for the companies, because their prices are much too high.

Still no pictures around of the new Sovremenny?

The sixth and seventh 636M as well as first of Sovremenny’s were officially delivered to China on 28 December. Last Kilo will be delivered not later than 1 April, 2006 and Sovremenny should be delivered not later than 1 July, 2006.

Are there any photos of the new Sovremenny class? What is her name?

In Weyer’s Warship of the World 2005/2007 there is a drawing. There are differences between the new and the older two. E.g. only one 13 cm twin turret, 3 cm Kashtan (not AK-360). In this drawing the Shtil SAM launchers look identical. Do they have a new VLS system to launch SAMs?

In those sea states, I believe the speed is reduced in any case.

The Arleigh Burke can keep their speed certainly in much worse conditions than the DDX design would.

Water breaking over the bow is not a sea worthiness issue with a tight, stable ship so much as it is a personnel issue. Perhaps the new design does not envision the necessity of personnel out on the bow deck in those conditions..

If the waves brake over the bow, a) the equipment on the decks will be demaged and b) the speed of the ships will be much reduced. a) appears not to be the problem, because there is not much on the decks. But b) will be a problem.

They have already built a 1/4 scale model of the vessel and have been testing it for some time. I believe we will see that the sea keeping qualities are very solid and that these vessels will hold together just fine in the worst of sea states.

This is really difficult to belief. The bow above water is very similar to the ships around 1900 – and they were very wet forward. There is nothing to deflect the waves. Therefore the waves break over the ship.

All modern ships have a very exaggerated bow to deflect the waves, e.g. the Arleigh Burke class or the Udaloy class. It is also possible to see the development of the bow, e.g. if you compare a destroyer of the Fletcher class, Charles F. Adams class and Arleigh Burke class. The hull of the DDX appears to be a step backwards in regard to the seaworthiness.

P.S. Why is the form of the gun turrets that strange? Do they contain some shelter for the barrel? This could hint to an expected wetness to protect the gun.

@ Hyperwarp: thanks for these drawings, but the scale is puzzling. With this scale bar, the Lanzhou would be 84 m long! As far I know Guangzhou (Type 052B) and Lanzhou (Type 052C) are 153 m long, whereas the Hangzhou is 156,4 m long.

    Hi,
does somebody have drawings of the Lanzhou class (Type 52C)? I found on the forum of http://www.modelwarships.com drawings of the Guangzhou class (Type 52B), but non of the Lanzhou class.

    Thanks
