The U.S. Coast Guard largest ships in the past, including the fairly recently retired ice breakers, were capable of carrying .5 inch guns and other heavy armament if a conflict arose.

The last icebreakers, which were ever armed with 12,7 cm (5″) guns, were USCGC Glacier, USCGC Westwind, and USCGC Northwind, which were decommissioned in 1987, 1988 and 1989, respectively. Not really recent 😉

Frankly? To me the Hamiltons (irrespective if they are 2, 4, 6 or “50”) are absolutely useless in military terms if the objective of the Philippine Defence Ministry is to somehow “deter” tha Chinese Naval encroachment of disputed South China Sea areas…

If you compare the Chinese and the Philippine economy, e.g. its size, you could recognise that the Philippine navy could not deter the Chinese one. That is impossible. The Philippines could not afford a navy big enough to do this.

The Philippines need allies to do that.

    @ Glendora:
is it now sure that 10 FREMM class frigates will be built? The last statement I had read was only 6.

These second line ships are heavily armed compared to the Soldati, Minerva, and Cassiopea classes.

What is the range of a MiG-29K vs. a Shenyang J-15? 2100 km vs. 3500 km? I would opt for the bigger aircraft, especially at sea.

    Nice photo!

In 1/700 there are kits for Vikramditya (HobbyBoss) and Viraat (Orange Hobby), but unfortunately not yet for Teg (Talwar class) and Mumbai (Delhi class).

It is interesting that the Project 15A destroyer still has a Thales LW-08 radar – not really the newest generation of radar.

I guess they do not talk about a Project 705K, but probably about another Project 671?

Is there any Russian class of submarines, the Russians call “Alfa”? E.g. the NATO Alfa class is Lira, Akula is Schtschuka-B and Oscar is Granit..

E.g. the bulwarks at the bow of some of the Russian ships appear to be less stealthy compared to most other modern ships.

Why is a project 22350 more stealthy compared to MEKO A-200SAN? Or e.g. a British Type 45?

From memory even their Horizon class boats have 3 x 76mm guns.

The Italian navy uses 76 mm guns as CIWS, therefore the heavy gun armament. The new FREMM class ships have either one 127 mm and one 76 mm (general-purpose variant) or two 76 mm (ASM variant), here the lead ship of GP variant:

I think they also look cool. Also the new Russian ships look cool – but not that stealthy:

You mean plans for their future or Blue Prints? I didn`t understand your question, leon… 🙂

I was asking for blueprints – to use it to build ship models of them.

Of many research ships plans are available on-line, e.g. of German and US American ships.

    E.g. R/V Knorr:

Thank you very much for the photos!

Do you know if there are plans available for Ary Rongel and Almirante Maximiano?

the one thing Japan messed up on with its conquest of China is that they didn’t conquer more or hold on to it long enough.
Had they done so, the Chinese would’ve considered the Japanese rule as a new dynasty and accepted it as a mandate of heaven as they do with all the other foreign conquerors.

China was at that time no monarchy anymore – 1912 a republic was proclaimed. It is very unlikely that Japanese rule would have been accepted, if they would have conquered even more.

Japanese war criminals got wonderful careers as academics and entrepreneurs and in government, and while the trauma of nuclear bombs and fire bombing remained in the memory of Japan’s social fabric, neither their society nor government has had to face the full reflection of their actions, and probably never will.

That was unfortunately also true for many Nazi mass murderers 😉 Actually, most Nazis were later useful for the western powers in the Cold War (because of their common interest in hunting communists) and only very few high ranking Nazis were convicted in the late 1940s).

That government pour money into social security!? You are sure that we are talking about the British government in July 2013!?

I guess that you have not realised that many western governments have the main goal to reduce taxes and spending of the state. And that results in less money available for the military – and for many other purposes INCLUDING social security.
